Macaws. By Adon Shapiro. Kinds of Macaws. Macaws are the largest bird in the parrot family. There are 17 different types of macaws. A few are the scarlet macaw (top right), the blue and yellow macaw (bottom right), and the hyacinth macaw. The scientific name for the macaw is PSITTACIDAE.

  2. Kinds of Macaws Macaws are the largest bird in the parrot family. There are 17 different types of macaws. A few are the scarlet macaw (top right), the blue and yellow macaw (bottom right), and the hyacinth macaw. The scientific name for the macaw is PSITTACIDAE.

  3. What Macaws Eat • Macaws eat mostly nuts, fruits, berries, and clay (see Interesting Facts).

  4. Enemies • An adult macaw’s only enemies are humans because they cut down the macaw’s homes and keep them as pets. A baby macaw has many other enemies, like other birds and jaguars.

  5. Where They Live • Macaws mainly live in the rainforests of South America (top right) and Costa Rica (bottom right). • They live in the canopy and emergent layer of the rainforest.

  6. Breeding • Macaws have only two eggs at a time. Babies are called fledglings.

  7. Interesting Facts • 1. Macaws eat some poison berries and unripe fruit but don’t get sick because of the clay in Their digestive system. • 2.Macaws have four toes: two facing forward and two back to help them grip on to things.
