  1. 7-8 WEEKS BEFORE YOU MOVE Decide on the exact moving day. Calculate your approximate moving budget. Decide what you’d like to keep and what you’d like to get rid off. Sort through your garden, garage, and basement. Create a special folder for moving documents. Make a note of any belongings that require special care while moving. Think of furniture placement in your new home. Go on-site if possible or use a floor home plan to ensure all your current furniture will fit. Make sure you large furniture items will make it through doors. rentberry.com Start using up all frozen foods you have. Give notice to all service providers: health club, alarm company, lawn service, and etc.

  2. 4-6 WEEKS BEFORE YOU MOVE Investigate moving company options available, and choose one with the best reviews or quality-to-price ratio. Transfer and set up utilities at your new home. Pre-plan and schedule any necessary repairs required. Arrange mail redirection to your new address. Get rid of all hazardous materials you won’t move (paints, aerosols, automotive supplies, and so forth). Think of all items you’ll need for your ‘first-day’ box and separate them from all the rest. Solve your box problem. Either ask your office manager and people from groceries about free boxes or ordem them from a moving company. Schedule a transfer of records (medical, financial, children’s records from schools, and so forth). rentberry.com

  3. 2-3 WEEKS BEFORE YOU MOVE Make a full-scale cleaning. Start packing all non-essential items or those out of the season. Separate valuable items you’d like to transfer by yourself and mark them as ‘don’t move’. If you’re moving far and by your own care, make sure to service it so it’s ready for a big day. Think of a meal plan for your last before-moving week. Return borrowed or rented items from your home. rentberry.com

  4. 1 WEEK BEFORE YOU MOVE Confirm all moving details if you’re using a moving company. Try to finish your packing and mark all boxes with index cards and ‘go to’ labels. Defrost your fridge and freezer. Pack your ‘first-day’ box or luggage. Gather all jewelry and other tiny valuables. Pack them in a separate box. Go through the checklist to make sure nothing is overlooked. If you have children, ask friends or babysitter to look after them on a moving day. If you are not a happy freelancer, ask for being off on your moving day. rentberry.com Take care of prescriptions, make sure you have enough for at least two weeks. Throw a farewell party.

  5. MOVING DAY If using a moving company, walk through your house and give movers clear instructions. Check and record your utility meters. Make sure to turn off air conditioning and water heaters. If something’s missing, notify your moving company immediately. Have a sigh of relief and relax. rentberry.com
