What is a key responsibility of a preacher/teacher of the gospel?

  • What two admonitions did Paul give Timothy?

(2 Tim 2:1 NKJV) You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

(2 Tim 2:2 NKJV) And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

  • What is the lesson to be learned from the soldier?

(2 Tim 2:3 NKJV) You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

(2 Tim 2:4 NKJV) No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of [this] life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.

  • What is the lesson to be learned from the competitor?

(2 Tim 2:5 NKJV) And also if anyone competes in athletics, he is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules.

  • What is the lesson to be learned from the farmer?

(2 Tim 2:6 KJV) The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.

KJV footnote: Or, The husbandman labouring first, must be partaker of the fruits (See also A. Clarke and M. Henry)

  • What was Paul’s motivation to endure?

(2 Tim 2:8 NKJV) Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel,

(2 Tim 2:9 NKJV) for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained.

(2 Tim 2:10 NKJV) Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

  • Did those referred to as the “elect” have to take any actions to obtain/ ensure their salvation?

(2 Tim 2:10 NKJV) Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

(2 Tim 2:12 NKJV) If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us.

(2 Tim 2:21 NKJV) Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.

(2 Tim 2:25-26 NKJV) in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

  • What must we do to be able to live with Christ? (Gal. 2:20)

(2 Tim 2:11 NKJV) This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, We shall also live with Him.

How do we “die” with Christ? (Rom. 6:5)

  • What does endurance ensure?

(2 Tim 2:12 NKJV) If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us.

  • How reliable is Christ (and His words)?

(2 Tim 2:13 NKJV) If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.

  • What is essential to being approved of God?

(2 Tim 2:15 NKJV) Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

(2 Tim 2:15 NASB) Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, handling accurately the word of truth.

  • What are some things that aid in “handling accurately” God’s words to man?

(2 Tim 2:14 NKJV) Remind them of these things, charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit, to the ruin of the hearers.

(2 Tim 2:15 NKJV) Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing [handling accurately, NASB]the word of truth.

(2 Tim 2:16 NKJV) But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.

(2 Tim 2:23 NKJV) But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife.

  • In what ways are doctrinal error like a cancer (gangrene)?

(2 Tim 2:17 NKJV) And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort,

(2 Tim 2:17 NASB) and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,

  • Give one example of the false teachings of that era.

(2 Tim 2:18 NKJV) who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some.

  • What is the “solid foundation of God”?

(2 Tim 2:19 NKJV) Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

  • What is its “seal”?

  • Can a person change from a vessel of dishonor to one of honor?

(2 Tim 2:20 NKJV) But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor.

(2 Tim 2:21 NKJV) Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.

  • How can a person make that change? (2 Cor 7:1, 1 John 3:3)

  • What should be the attitude of a true “servant of the Lord”?

(2 Tim 2:24 NKJV) And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,

(2 Tim 2:25 NKJV) in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,

  • What should he be able to do?

(2 Tim 2:24 NKJV) And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,

(2 Tim 2:25 NKJV) in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,

(2 Tim 2:24 NKJV) And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient,

(2 Tim 2:25-26 NKJV) in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

(2 Tim 2:25 NKJV) in humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth,

(2 Tim 2:26 NKJV) and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.

(1 Th 2:16 NKJV) forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved, ….

(2 Th 2:10 NKJV) … among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

What to remember l.jpg
What to Remember ourselves?

From Chapter 2

  • We must commit the gospel to others, especially those who will spread it.

  • Work, following the rules, and endurance are necessary to receive the reward.

  • We must handle the Word of God correctly, including opposing errors that would compromise it.

  • To be pure, we must take actions to become pure and to stay pure.
