    • The signal that has been in use since May 10, 1928

      • WRGB-TV, Schenectady, NY – Still on the air

      • WWOR-TV, Newark, NJ – Still on the air

    • By 1939 the three major networks were started in NY

    • Standardized in 1949 as NTSC

      • National Television System Committee

    • In 1953, color was added to the existing standard

    • NTSC has a hue problem (Europe solved with PAL)

    • VHF – Very High Frequency 30MHz – 300MHz

    • UHF – Ultra High frequency 300MHz – 3000MHz (3GHz)

Understanding Broadcast Television

  • What is Digital Television?

    • Replacement signal definition for NTSC (analog), called ATSC

      • Advanced Television System Committee

    • Committee formed in 1982

    • Adopted by the FCC on December 4, 1996

    • Adopted by Argentina in 1998

    • By October 2000 in the USA, there were 158 stations in 55 markets broadcasting DTV to 65% of television viewers nationwide.

    • By November 2005, the numbers were 1525 stations in 211 markets with 95% coverage of television viewers.

    • Signals are broadcast over VHF/UHF frequencies

Understanding Broadcast Television

  • Do I Need a Digital Antenna ?

    • Frequencies are exactly the same as it was for analog television

      • You do not NEED a new antenna

      • … but you might want a better antenna

  • The signal changes from a wave form to a stream of 1’s and 0’s.

    • Waveforms are still recognizable even with large errors

      • More errors equal more snow and static

    • Stream of 1’s and 0’s is unrecognizable with very small errors

      • More errors equal NO picture and/or no sound

        • 1080i = 1920 x 1080 pixels (2.07mb per image)

        • 720p = 1280 x 720 pixels (0.92mb per image)

        • 480p = (640,854) x 480 (0.31-0.41mb per image)

      • 16:9 Aspect ratio

    • Subset of Digital Television

  • Digital Cable Box (Satellite Included)

    • All digital signals

    • Only a few are HDTV
