  2. Stress is a beast. It creeps in at the worst time and wreaks havoc on your day. Managing stress in any profession is tough, but as a real estate professional, stress can be a huge destabilizer. Think about it, you are working with clients who are taking a huge step in their lives – buying or selling a home. These interactions already come with tons of pressure, so if you are continually stressed, it can make or break a deal. People feed off each other’s energy, and that’s why it’s important to have a plan in place to ward off the beast. There are hundreds of tips for stress management, but we’ve narrowed it down to 7 key tips to keep yourself as relaxed as possible. Tips for stress management Stress Tip #1 – Set SMART goals. Setting goals is a fantastic way to have something to aim for, and in turn, celebrate. Be sure that you are setting SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely. Below is an example of a smart goal. You can set as many goals as you’d like, but make certain that they are SMART. You should have a go-to person to help hold you accountable for the goals you set. Also, don’t forget to celebrate each time you accomplish a goal. It can be as simple as a nice dinner or a weekend getaway. Just be sure to make time to celebrate. Stress Tip #2 –Keep a list of “things to do” and stay focused on short-term accomplishments. Now that you have your SMART goals, keep track of your daily/weekly tasks so that you can prioritize your to -do list. Some people like to track their to-do lists electronically and others prefer the good old pen and paper. There are lots of great apps for the techie and an infinite number of daily planners to suit anyone’s style. To do list - real estate agent

  3. Stress Tip #3 –Become more tolerant and don’t be overly critical of yourself or others. This boils down to not sweating the small stuff. If you spend time being overly critical of yourself or others, you won’t have time left to set SMART GOALS or check items off your to-do list. It’s ok to hold yourself to a certain standard, but you should also give yourself a break every now and then. Being critical of those around you, is simply a waste of time. Focus on the things you can control, and you will be in a much happier place. Stress Tip #4 – Mix leisure with work. Take breaks and get away when you can. When you are busy, time flies. It’s easy to get wrapped up in your day with meetings and phone calls. However, it’s crucial that you give yourself a break to decompress. It can be hard to manage breaks, so we recommend working them into your calendar, if possible. Just be conscious to take a 15-minute break every few hours. Get a coffee, browse social media, read a magazine, stretch. Do whatever you can to help yourself recharge and take your mind off work. Easier said than done, but if you work it into your routine, it will become easier over time. Stress Tip #5 – Make a point to spend quality time with your friends and family. Spending time with the people you love is one of the best ways to de-stress. Book a lunch with your best friend. Go out for dinner and drinks. Plan a day trip with the kids. These are great ways to spend quality time with those you care about. You can use this time to detach yourself from work and be in the moment. Stress Tip #6 – Do something nice for someone else. A wonderful way to boost your mood is to do something nice for someone. It can be for a total stranger or someone you know. Next time you are getting a coffee at the drive-thru, pay for the person behind you. Be a little nicer on the highway and let a few cars in front of you. Come home with a card for your significant other thanking them for always supporting you. These examples are simple ways to do something nice and are sure to lift your spirits.

  4. Stress Tip #7 – Get plenty of sleep. This is obvious but often ignored. You need sleep to function. The magic number is between 7-9 hours of sleep per night, according to the Sleep Foundation. Sometimes getting yourself to fall asleep is half the battle. Here are a few ways to help relax before bed. Shut off all electronic devices 30 minutes before bed Read a book for 20-30 minutes before falling asleep Make sure you have the proper pillow for your sleep type (i.e. side sleeper) Listen to soothing, ambient sounds Use lavender pillow spray or other aromatherapy scents for relaxation And there you have it, 7 effective tips to help you combat stress.
