  1. Things to Know About Dubai Inheritance Law As head of the family, you might be concerned about the future of your loved ones and how you can divide your assets. Inheritance matters can be complicated, and in Dubai, there are laws governing them. That is why it is in your best interest to speak to an experienced and reputable lawyer who has extensive knowledge and background in Dubai inheritance law. They are likely to work in a law firm with legal advocates who have a record of success in providing legal assistance and advice on a wide range of asset division disputes and inheritance matters. Whether you need someone trustworthy to help your heirs or enforce your will, they promise the highest level of service to you and your family. Dubai inheritance law can change at any time, but it can be challenging to keep up with the updates, especially for expats. In early November 2020, changes were made to the legislation. Expats are now able to apply the laws of their homeland or nationality when dealing with their personal estate. Before this change, unless official legal measures apply, the Sharia Law of Inheritance was practiced and followed, even for the estates of expatriates who passed away in the UAE. This resulted in their assets being distributed according to Sharia law. The same laws applied to the custodianship of any children. The new Dubai inheritance law can be beneficial to any non-Emirati, as well as to investors and residents living in the UAE as it may ease their worries regarding the distribution of their estate. When their home country law applies, they may choose who can receive their estate in a way they see fit. With this, courts expecting to apply respective home country laws as the legislative changes provide the legal framework for them to proactively do so. That said expats can still choose the Sharia Law to apply to them if they want to. Regardless of whether you are following the Sharia law or the new Dubai inheritance law, it makes sense to work with a qualified lawyer who can guide you and help you make informed decisions. Be sure to seek legal counsel, even if you feel confident about your estate distribution and inheritance practices.
