In India, it is seen that diets of women from the low socioeconomic groups are very much similar throughout pre-pregnant, pregnant as well as breastfeeding periods. As a result, there is an extensive maternal undernourishment causing high occurrences of babies born with low birth weight and cases where the expecting mother passes away. Additional foods are required to improve weight gain during pregnancy and birth weight of babies. It is therefore essential to have a provision of good nutrition during lactation and pregnancy period. Major points regarding Nutrition for Pregnant and Lactating Women  Pregnancy is physiologically as well as nutritionally an extremely difficult period. More food is needed to meet the requirements of the fetus  A woman makes herself ready to meet the nutritional demands by increasing her own body fat deposits throughout pregnancy  A lactating mother calls for more food to secrete sufficient quantity and quality of milk, as well as to maintain her own health.
