  1. Nepal Requests Rice, Sugar From India To Avoid Possible Food Shortage Nepal Requests Rice, Sugar From India To Avoid Possible Food Shortage In The Upcoming Festive Season In The Upcoming Festive Season India’s north-east neighbor, Nepal has requested the Government of India (GOI), to supply rice and sugar as a precautionary move to address possible food shortage in the country in the upcoming festive season. Nepal’s Reliance on India Nepal’s Reliance on India Located in South Asia, Nepal is highly dependent on India to meet its domestic needs. Over the years, it has turned to India, quite frequently for sourcing agro-commodities for its domestic consumption and a look at the data reveal the same. In the last fiscal year itself, Nepal imported 1.4 million tonnes of rice in total, out of which 1.38 million tonnes of non-basmati rice and 19,000 tonnes of basmati rice was sourced directly from India. Owing to its high reliance on India, Nepal has once again turned to the Asian nation with requests for rice and sugar shipments.

  2. Official’s Statements Official’s Statements Nepal’s Commerce and Supplies Ministry Joint Secretary, Mr. Ram Chandra Tiwari said in a statement that Nepal has requested India to provide one million tonnes of paddy, 100,000 tonnes of rice and 50,000 tonnes of sugar. He further added that there is no immediate scarcity of these commodity in the market. However, owing to India’s ban on non-basmati white rice exports, concerns over the same have grown. Experts and analysts believe the prices to rise in the months of October and November i.e. in Nepal’s festive season owing to possibility of hoarding by market players and traders. It is because of this factor that the Nepal government has requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India for shipments of rice and sugar. The Bottom Line The Bottom Line India is a major player in the global agro market and a number of countries depend upon it for their domestic consumption needs.
