  • Tlingit fathers teach their daughters to carve totem poles. These totem poles go outside of there homes. These totem poles mark the social rank of the family. A traditional totem pole has animals such as Beavers, Ravens, Eagles, and Frogs.

  • The Tlingit Indians were famous for their art and technology. They used there technology to build dams and traps for catching salmon.


  • The Tlingit Indians made large canoes that could hold up to fifty people.

  • The Tlingit Indians did not create pottery but they made baskets out of cedar trees.

  • The Tlingit made clothes out of goats, deer, bear, and bird feathers. They also wore water proof hats woven very tightly.

  • Males, females, and children had nose rings which were giant silver rings.

  • The fishermen wore woven cedar bark garments, made from Cedar trees which grew everywhere and were important.

  • At ceremonies dancers wore colorful Chikat blankets.

The Tlingit’s used many ways to get around for transportation. Onw way to get around was the Canoe. A large Canoe held fifty people and were used to trade with and to go to wars. Small canoes were used to fish with

The Tlingit’s also walked. Walking was a simple way to get around.


  • Swimming was also a easy way to get around. If the Tlingit’s did not have a canoe, they would probably swim.

  • Horses was a big way to get around. The Tlingit’s would probably go on horses to move around quickly. They portly went on horses a lot.

  • The Tlingit’s gave gifts usually at Potlatches. Potlaches are special feast. Somethings they usually gave at Potlatches fur robes and canoes. The gifts depended on the person.

  • The Tlingit Tribe ate roots, berries, salmon, cod, herring , trout, halibut, mussels, clams, eggs,sea lions, otters, goats, bear,and deer. Salmon was there main source of food.

  • They caught it with traps, spears, or nets.They ate it fresh or dried.

  • They cooked there food over a smokey fire.

  • The Tlingit tribe often found there food by the sea,on the shore, in streams, rivers, oceans. Or in dense forests

  • Many times the Tlingit tribe took the oils from the fish to use for many other cooking purposes.

  • The Tlingit tribe usually ate salmon that could be cooked fresh or dried.

  • They speared,used nets or traps to catch the fish.

  • They got most of their food from the water.

  • The Tlingit tribe also ate roots and berries that they found on the ground.

  • If a tribe lived inland, they would hunt mountain goats ,bear, and deer for food.

  • The Tlingit built large homes because they were highly skilled woodworkers.

  • The Tlingit made temporary fishing camps in witch they lived in houses made of cedar.

  • The Tlingit’s homes are painted with colorful designs.

  • Most homes had a totem pole standing in front of the houses to honor a chief or family members.


  • The Tlingit sometimes carved animals on the wooden posts that supported doors and entrances.

  • The Tlingit lived in the Northwest Coast where the forest and sea provided abundant resources like fuel, wood for homes, from the forest and halibut from the sea.

  • The land had direct water routes which helped them trade with other regions and therefore became wealthy.

  • The land had animals to hunt year round and berries to eat.


  • The heavy rainfall helped create a rainforest environment with cool summers and mild winters.

  • The Tlingit lived on the beaches and islands of southwestern Alaska where the islands created a protected waterway that allowed travel and communication by water.

  • Today the Tlingit people maintain interests in fishing and working in the forests, which are things that helped the Tlingit survive over time.
