Some Characteristics of Sound

A Good Website for An Introduction to Sound Waves

Amplitude or Loudness Human ear - from 1 - 120db-SPL

Frequency or Pitch Human voice - 10 - 20, 000 hertz Musical instruments - 30 - 20,000

Timbre A sound’s ‘color’ and richness

Microphone Impedance Levels:

Ratings in Ohms Impedance Level 38 - 150 Low 600-2400 Medium 9600 & above High

WHAT IS IMPEDANCE?

Impedance is an electronics term which measures the amount of opposition a device has to an AC current (such as an audio signal). Technically speaking, it is the combined effect of capacitance, inductance, and resistance on a signal.

LOW impedance is better than HIGH impedance. Low is usually associated with Professional Mics,High, with amateur Mics

Some Mic Characteristics

RECORDING ELEMENTS

1. Ribbon - delicate, rich sound, generally for studio.

2. Moving Coil/Dynamic - sturdy, multiple sizes, shapes & applications.

3. Condenser - charge plate; needs a power source; reliable and varied applications

Pickup Patterns (Directionality)

1. Omni 2. Bi- 3. Uni- a) cardioid b) hyper cardioid c) super cardioid

Guidelines for audio recording l.jpg
Guidelines for Audio Recording

  • Do not use on Auto unless absolutely necessary

  • Don’t let the audio signal over modulate, especially in digital formats

  • Always use head sets for monitoring audio, then:

  • Listen for location noises: air conditioners, planes, background talk, electrical hums, etc. STOP THE RECORDING/TAKE if you encounter any of the above. Take appropriate action to correct the problem if at all possible..

  • Don’t let an audio (XLR cord) run parallel to an Extension Cord.
