  3. Asher Brown Durand(1796-1886) He was a painter and engraver. In the 1830s, he turned increasingly to painting. At first he did portraits, but then devoted himself to landscape. Thomas Cole was a major source of inspiration, and Durand's most famous painting, Kindred Spirits (1849, currently in the New York Public Library), was painted as a memorial to him.   5. Albert Pinkham Pyder(1847-1917) Self-taught American artist. Rejected by the National Academy of Design at twenty, he trained with a minor artist, William Edgar Marshall, and was then admitted. Travelled in Europe in 1877, 1882, 1887 and 1896. A visionary painter, he chose subjects from Shakespeare, Byron, Poe and Wagner.   15. Frederick Chopin (1810-1849) w.etv.state.ms.us/ prm/mch/mch.html Chopin's beautiful piano pieces earned him a reputation as the greatest composer for the piano. His family was poor and lived in Poland. His mother was Polish and his father was French. He went from Poland to Paris in 1831, and in 1838 he toured England and Scotland though he was very ill.
