19"There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. 20"But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, 21"desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. 22"So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23"And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24"Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.‘ 25"But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.
26'And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.'
27"Then he said, 'I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house,
28'for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.'
29"Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.'
30"And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.'
31"But he said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.'"
26'And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.‘ 27"Then he said, 'I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house, 28'for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.‘ 29"Abraham said to him, 'They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.‘ 30"And he said, 'No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.‘ 31"But he said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.'"
-In Luke 16:19-31 we find a series of truths, that can be applied to some needs that the church has today
-While Lazarus was comforted in Abraham’s bosom, the rich man was being tormented
-The rich man in the torment of Hades can teach us many helpful lessons
-We want to view those lessons today…
WILLINGNESS TO ADMIT MISTAKES
-Man is a proud being, and to admit error in one’s life is usually out of the question
-Notice that the rich man never argued with Abraham about being sent to torment
-The rich man knew that he had wasted his life, and ruined his chances of being saved
-Also, he wanted others to be warned so that they did not make the same mistakes (vs. 30)
THE CHURCH WOULD BE SO MUCH MORE WONDERFUL IF ALL WOULD PUT AWAY PRIDE AND BIGOTRY AND RECOGNIZE THE ERROR IN THEIR LIVES
-I John 1:5-2:2; Rom 3:23; Acts 8:14-24
RECOGNITION OF TRUTH
-In verses 27-28 the rich man wanted Lazarus to go “testify” to his brothers
-Truth meant something to a man who was receiving the effects of rejecting it
-It was at this point that he wished he had obeyed the truth, and been saved
-It is too late to know about truth after one’s death, one must obey the truth in life
THE CHURCH WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED IF IT CONTINUES TO RECOGNIZE THE BIBLE AS ITS GUIDE, AND GOD AS THE GIVER OF THAT SAVING TRUTH
-John 17:17; I Thess. 2:13; Rom. 1:16-17
-Prayers can come in a petition or a plea, and we find a strong plea in this text
- “Have mercy on me” is a plea that every sinner must make before death (See Psalm 51: 1-3)
-It was impossible to give mercy to a man that never acknowledged sin in his lifetime
-Imagine a place, where you beg for a drop of water to cool your tongue…
THE CHURCH MUST APPRECIATE THE AVENUE AND PRIVELAGE OF PRAYER TO GOD MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH JESUS CHRIST. WE MUST POUR OUR HEARTS OUT TO GOD WITH THANKS AND PRAISE IN SINCERITY AND TRUTH
-I Thess. 5:17; I Pet. 5:7; Jam. 1:6-8
PERSONAL CONCERN FOR THE LOST
- “I have five brothers…testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment” (vs. 28)
- Notice that Abraham appealed to “Moses and the prophets” (the words of God at that time)
-If his brothers rejected truth like he did in his “lifetime”, then they would also be lost
-A soul winner in hell…how out of place! Who can you teach before it is too late?
THE CHURCH NEEDS TO RISE ABOVE ITS PATHETIC ATTITUDES TOWARD EVANGELISM, AND GET TO WORK IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD, SHARING THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
-Matt. 28:18-20; II Tim. 2:2; Jam. 5:19-20
WE MUST HAVE:
A Willingness To Admit Mistakes
A Recognition Of Truth
Personal Concern For The Lost
