Overview – Types of Digital Sats • Starter / Easy • Basic terrestrial packet TNC • 1200 bps AFSK, AX.25 • Advance • Special packet TNC for satellites • Typically 9600 bps FSK using PACSAT • Modern satellite transceiver or mod to older unit • PACSAT control software (rigs, antennas, etc) • Super advanced – 9600 bps up and 38400 bps down • Other • Not technically satellite(s), but operate the same KU7M

PCSAT-1 (NO-44) • PCSat – Launched Sept 30th, 2001 • Built by US Naval Academy • Unique sat, only has two TNC’s for processors (KPC-9612+) • Officially declared “dead” Sept 2003 • Death due to batteries • Online for 19 months, 2000 users world wide, averaged 50 users per 8 hour period • In reality batteries are only semi-dead, when in full sun bird comes “alive”.   5. PCSat-1 Details • Operates on 2m - 145.825Mhz • Address as PCSAT or WIDE2-2 • Easy to work • Can be heard with HT and rubber duck • If not busy, can also get into bird with HT at 5watts with ‘good’ rubber duck. (D7/D700 excellent radios for this) KU7M

PCSat2 • Not “technically” digital satellite • Launched or “attached” in 2005 • Was removed from service on Sept 15th, 2006 • Besides comm hardware, includes NRL solar experiments • APRS used to beacon data from experiment • Supported Modes • Digipeater: supports both 2m and 70cm and 1200/9600 baud • PSK31 Analog transponder: 10m USB uplink and 70cm FM downlink • Full duplex FM voice repeater (Intended purpose is for ISS crew) KU7M

  9. PCSat2 Details • Telemetry for NRL solar experiment • 9600 baud downlink at 435.275 • PSK31 Analog Transponder • 29.4 Mhz USB uplink • 435.275 FM downlink • Digipeater • 435.275 FM 1200 baud downlink/145.825 uplink • 145.825 FM 1200 baud downlink/435.275 uplink KU7M

  10. ISS APRS Digipeater • Kenwood D700 installed 12/2003 • When enabled, ISS D700 becomes a very wide coverage digipeater • Uplink: 145.99Mhz • Downlink: 145.80Mhz • Digi-Path: ARISS, RS0ISS-3, WIDE2-2 • http://www.ariss.net/ KU7M

  11. So how do I start playing? • Two easy ways to get started • 1st Solution: Leverage D700 • Great because built in 9600 and 1200 TNC • Dual VFO support (2m/70cm) • 2nd solution using Windows PC and standard 1200 baud TNC • Great because nearly everybody has today KU7M

  12. D700 Suggestions • Leverage PM mode – allows changing personality of radio without pain of re-configuration • Suggest two configurations • PCSat2 • ISS Voice • Add PCSat2 and ISS downlink freq to scan – when hear activity can switch over KU7M

D700 Config - ISS Packet Mode • Band A (left) – Config for Trans on 145.800 • Band B (right) – Config for Recv on 145.990 • Configure SSID to something different then normal SSID (i.e. KU7M-6) • Path (menu 3-b): ARISS,SGATE,WIDE2-2 • Beacon Rate (menu 3-d): to 0.5 or 1 • Suggest setting Message group (menu 3-P) to “*” – will enable you to see all messages KU7M

  15. Windows Solution - UISS • Packet problem specifically for ISS and PCSat • Designed to send UPROTO messages or APRS locations/messages • Support digi sats like NO44, ISS, PCSat2 • Supports AGW Packet Engine • Can hook into UI-View for display of sats KU7M

AO-51 • Odd set of conditions lead contributed to mission goals • Amsat-NA hadn’t designed and launched bird since 1990, need to keep the skills sharp • EasySats are very popular • Needed success after AO-40 • Stepping stone for Eagle • Many different modes supported, including a “Experimenters Wednesday” KU7M

AO-51 • Store and forward bulletin board system (BBS) using PACSAT protocol suite • Address as PECHO-12 • Digital downlinks also contain telemetry • 9600 bps FM FSK, 2m uplink and 70cm downlink • Experimenter’s Day • Default signals is digital: 1268.7 Mhz up at 9600 bps and 2401.2 Mhz down at 38.4k bps • Another common: 10m SSB UP/ 70cm FM down using PSK31 (or CW) KU7M

Why Advanced Bird? • Really need Az/El rotators and gain antennas to track bird • Some people are successful with omni directional antennas, but limited to passes between 20° and 40° • Bird moves fast, so to maintain digital link, need to automate tracking (if using gain antennas) • Special software called WISP that controls rotators, PC, and connections • Requires “specialized” radios • Support multiple bands at same time • For 9600 bps and up, special connection required in radios KU7M
