  2. Genesis 12:1-5 • 12:1 The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.

  3. Genesis 12:1-5 • 2 "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. • 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

  4. Genesis 12:1-5 • 4 So Abram left, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Haran. 5 He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

  5. In the life of Abraham we see the primary characteristic of every HERO— • —Faithfulness.

  7. The Cost of Discipleship • Dietrich Bonhoeffer -- a German Lutheran pastor, theologian and participant in the German resistance movement against Nazism. He was involved in plots planned by members of the Abwehr (the German Military Intelligence Office) to assassinate Adolf Hitler. He was arrested in March 1943, imprisoned, and eventually hanged just before the end of the Second World War in Europe.

Abram’s Promises • He will be a great nation. 12:2 • His Name will be great. 12:2 • All Peoples will be blessed through him. 12:3 • God would be his shield and his reward 15:1 • His offspring would be more numerous than the stars. 15:5 • His name would be changed for Exalted father to father of a multitude. 17:4-5

Abram’s Promises • Gen 17:15-17 • 15 God also said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah. 16 I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her." • 17 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, "Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?" NIV

  13. Faithfulness Based upon Promises • God’s word defines truth for our lives. • --Knowing Who Am I in Christ-- • Trusting in the promises despite circumstances determines faithfulness.

  14. Faithfulness Born through Sacrifice • Faithfulness Based upon Promises • Faithfulness Nurtured through the Relationship • He keeps building altars. 12:8, 13:4 • He receives a blessing 14:18 • By chapters 15, 16 and 17 he is communing in God’s presence.

  15. Faithfulness Nurtured through the Relationship • Take responsibility for maintaining a right relationship with God. • Never accepting what was before as enough for today.

Faithfulness Tempered through Testing • Heroes are prepared for the great tests of faith by learning faithfulness in the smaller ones. • Despite the magnitude of the test, God’s promises remain. • 8 Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together.
