  4. •resurrection is an accomplished fact•resurrection is hope for a better tomorrow•resurrection is a new beginning•resurrection is the first step into glorification

  5. • the Gospel of Mark tells the story of Jesus’ life and death, but it closes with a cliffhanger:three women go to his tomb, only to tremble with fear at finding the crypt bare

  6. • like a season finale, Mark leaves the reader wanting more•the Greek translation of Mark even stops in the middle of a sentence: it leaves us staring mid-sentence out into a future we cannot see or predict

  7. • it shows God is able to do things far beyond our prediction and control• we can participate in it, but we’re not in charge

  8. • the suspense created by Mark is resolved in the other three gospels:they tell the rest of the story

  9. • and the epistles show that resurrection is a part of saving grace and our future glorification

  10. • the gospels show what happened historically;the epistles show the doctrinal significance of what happened for this life and for the next

  11. GLORIFICATION

  12. • glorification is accomplished in five phases, stages, or steps:(1) the glorification of Jesus beginning with his resurrection and continuing to his exaltation in heaven,(2) the glorification of the saints at the rapture,(3) the glorification of the saints at the Judgment Seat of Christ,(4) the glorification of the saints at the beginning of the millennial Kingdom, and(5) the glorification of all creation at the beginning of the millennial Kingdom

  13. Hope of Glorification

  14. • the forty grace gifts given to us at the moment of salvation are a part of our future glorification,such as being crucified with Christ (Rom 6:6; Gal 2:20), (2) dead with Christ (Rom 6:8; Col 3:3; 1 Peter 2:24), (3) buried with Christ (Rom 6:4; Col 2:12) (4) raised with Christ (Rom 6:4; 7:4; Col 2:12; 3:1), and (5) given a resurrection body forever (1 Cor 15:40-54)

  15. • add to these such gifts as redemption, justification, propitiation, reconciliation, sanctification, regeneration, eternal life, eternal security, adoption, indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and spiritual gifts

  16. • the glorification of the Messiah is prophesied in the Old Testament:As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful search and inquiry, seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow (1 Peter 1:10-11).

  17. •“the grace that would come to you” is either the coming birth of a Savior (cf. Luke 2:11) or saving grace that consists of forty gifts given by God at the moment of salvation• saving grace includes being raised with Christ (positional truth, Rom 6:4; 7:4; Col 2:12; 3:1) and receiving a resurrection body (ultimate truth, 1 Cor 15:40–44)•“the glories to follow” is the future glorification of Jesus Christ• resurrection is a part of saving grace and the glorification of the saints

  18. • saving grace will be delivered in full at the rapture for believers living in the Church AgeTherefore, gird your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:13).

  19. • this is a command to obey in times of suffering:Put your hope in the grace that will be delivered to you at the rapture!

  20. •the adverb teleios indicates the degree of hope we should place in this saving grace we will receive at the rapture:“completely, totally, entirely, wholly”

  21. •“grace” refers to the abundance of grace gifts that will be given to us at the rapture of the Church (Rom 5:17)• we will receive a lot of grace - everything promised to those who are “in Christ”

  22. • we will receive all of these grace gifts in a split-second:Behold, I tell you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed (1 Cor 15:51-52).

  23. • the moment we receive this grace, we will be like Jesus:Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we shall be. We know that, when He appears, we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him just as He is (1 John 3:2).

  24. • the rapture is the time when positional truth becomes ultimate truth

  25. • hope continues until the promises of positional truth are fulfilled and become reality• for us, the promises of positional truth will be fulfilled or become ultimate truth at the rapture of the Church

  26. • the rapture or blessed hope is the beginning of our glorification:looking for the blessed hope (ten makarian elipda) and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus” (Titus 2:13).

  27. • in this verse Paul views one event from two different aspects:the blessed hope is the glorious appearing of our Savior(since one definite article in Greek introduces both ‘blessed hope’ and ‘glorious appearing’)

  28. • the blessed hope may also be called the happy hope!•it’s the time when our faith and hope in God’s promises are fulfilled and we receive all the gifts of saving grace—and that will make us very, very happy

  29. • this is “the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27)

  30. The Meaning of to Glorify or Glorification

  31. • the verb doxazo means to think about, have an opinion about, or to have a high opinion about something or someone•it always implies thinking highly of someone in the New Testament

  32. •it may be used of a high, lofty, or vaulting opinion of something, someone, or oneself• or to hold or to be held in honor because of one’s outstanding reputation

  33. • the opposite of glorification is dishonor and shame (1 Cor 15:42–43; 2 Cor 6:8; Phil 3:18–19)• to be honored creates a high opinion of someone; to be dishonored and shamed creates just the opposite - a low opinion

  34. Glorification of God

  35. Man’s chief and highest end is to glorify God, and fully to enjoy Him forever.Larger Catechism

  36. • Jesus glorified God during his earthly ministry:I glorified Thee on the earth, having accomplished the work which Thou hast given Me to do (John 17:4).•and we are called to glorify God in this life:Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven (Matt 5:16).

  37. • in return God will glorify us in the next life:and whom He predestined, these He also called; and whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified (Romans 8:30).

  38. Glorification of Jesus

  39. • the transfiguration is a pre-glorification to give Jesus the resolve to go to the cross (Matt 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-8; Luke 9:28-36)•God gave him a foretaste of what it will be like after he has died for the sins of the world and is glorified—a few minutes in his resurrection body•on the mount Jesus meets with Moses, Elijah, and God himself•this is the first time God speaks personally to Jesus since his baptism and anointing with the Spirit (Matt 3:17; Mark 1:11; Luke 3:22)

  40. • for Jesus, glorification includes his resurrection, resurrection body, exaltation (Phil 2:9), session at the right hand of the Father (Eph 1:20), blessing (Rev 5:12, 14), wisdom (Rev 5:12), inheritance (Rom 8:17; Heb 1:2), riches (Rev 5:12), all authority in heaven and on earth (Matt 28:18), name above all names (Eph 1:21; Phil 2:9; Heb 1:4), honor (Rev 5:12, 14), majesty (2 Peter 1:16), radiance (Rev 5:12, 14), power (Eph 1:21; Rev 5:12), rule (Eph 1:21-22; Col 2:10), and dominion (Eph 1:21-22; Phil 2:10-11; Rev 5:14)

  41. • Jesus was glorified after his earthly ministry:And now, glorify Thou Me together with Thyself, Father, with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was (John 17:5).

  42. • after his death, God glorified Jesus first with resurrection and then with exaltation

  43. • Jesus’ glorification was not all at the same time, but in phases, stages, or steps:resurrection, followed by ascension, then exaltation, session, and service (rule and ministry as our high priest)

  44. • resurrection is the first gift given in ultimate glorification

  45. Glorification of the Saints

  46. • to glorify the saints is to give them great gifts of grace, honor, and status - to make them higher than angels in their resurrection bodies (Heb 2:6-9)

  47. • for believers, glorification consists of being given many grace gifts such as the forty things we receive at the moment of salvation (Rom 5:17), a resurrection body (Phil 3:21), inheritance (Col 3:24; 1 Peter 1:4), rewards such as pure gold (Rev 3:18), treasure in heaven (1 Tim 6:19), special honors such as crowns (2 Tim 4:8; Rev 2:10) and diadems (perhaps implied in Rev 2:26-27), new names (Rev 2:17), honor (Rom 2:7), position, privilege, and jobs of service such as ruling with Christ (2 Tim 2:12; Rev 2:26-27)

  48. • there are three phases or stages of ultimate glorification:(1) the rapture, (2) the Judgment Seat of Christ (about three and a half years later), and (3) the beginning of the millennial Kingdom (at least another three and a half years)

  49. • our glorification does not take place all at once, but over a period of at least seven years

  50. • at the rapture (phase 1) we will be glorified with an abundance of grace that includes a resurrection body (Rom 5:17)•at the Judgment Seat of Christ (phase 2) we will be glorified for our service with rewards and special honors•and at the beginning of the millennial Kingdom (phase 3) we will be glorified with honor, privilege, jobs of service, and the right to rule with Christ (2 Tim 2:12; Rev 2:26-27)
