  3. Airport Sustainable Practices • Developed on a project-by-project basis as a collaboration between the airport and the engineers • Many airports have adapted the LEED program and created airport-specific sustainability guidelines and metrics • Applicable to landside and airside projects

SAGA Database Common Airside Sustainable Practices • Develop detailed technical specifications and standards to implement sustainability measures • Require regular sustainability progress reports during design • Develop and implement a Pavement Management Plan • Stormwater Management, Erosion and Sedimentation Control, Best Management Practices (BMPs)* • Use pavement materials that have a high Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) of at least 29* • Re-use existing runway pavement (i.e., for taxiways)* • Purchase concrete materials that consist of recycled content* • Install permeable pavement where possible* *Eligible for LEED

Airport Landside and Airside Sustainable Practices • Pavement Structure • Reuse of concrete and asphalt as base materials (i.e. rubblization, asphalt millings, etc.) • Processing of on-site materials for aggregate base courses • Warm Mix Asphalt • Pervious pavement system in parking lots, driveways, shoulders, airside roads, etc • On-site asphalt plant reduces truck hauling resulting in fuel savings and pollution reduction • Geothermally heated pavement with solar augmentation, eliminate use of de-icing chemicals and reduces plowing • On site material recycling • Reduces haul and energy used in production of new materials. May include asphalt reuse, base course reuse for stabilization • Pollution reduction and control practices during construction

Airport Landside and Airside Sustainable Practices • Parking/Airside • Reuse of light fixtures and signs and use of LED lighting fixtures • Roof overhangs in parking facilities • Parking revenue control can reduce dwell times of vehicles exiting parking (lower emissions) • Water Efficiency • Collection of runoff and grey water for irrigation of landscape areas • Water uses; building fixtures and landscape systems, permeable pavement, redirecting drainage to swales for percolation back into soil

KHA Airport Sustainability Projects • Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) • 1985 New Terminal and Parking Construction • Interim parking lot improvement project was designed to use recycled concrete as the base course for the flexible pavement design • Concrete from buildings, sidewalks and curbs was recycled on-site using a portable crushing plant • All density requirements were met • Challenge: material not worked to final grade quickly enough

Conclusions • Sustainable airport design and construction practices provide environmental, social and economical benefits: • Material Recycling • Concrete • Provides high quality base course at substantially reduced costs • Preserves landfill space and virgin resources • Reduces hydrocarbon emissions due to mining and trucking new materials and hauling waste materials • Asphalt Millings • Access Roads • Provides a serviceable road for the intended users at a very low cost • Reduces emissions both during construction due to the onsite material reuse, and the future reduction of wait and engine idle times for vehicles waiting to cross the main runway (FXE)

Recommendations • Inform the airport client of the available resources and practices being implemented • Collaboration between the airport, engineering and contractor team. • Sustainability must become a standard component of all airport design and construction projects • Consider various sustainable practices • Emissions reduction • Traditional Materials Recycling • Noise reduction • Alternative Fuels • Innovation Design (materials, community education, etc.) • Recommend future USGBC LEED rating for Airports
