The “Horse Sense” Mystery

Farmer Henry had 17 horses.

He would like to give his oldest son ½ of them, his middle son 1/3 of them and his youngest son 1/9 of them.

How could he accomplish this?

Simple!

First, he borrows one horse from his neighbor---

There are now a total of 18 horses.

Next, he gives 1/3 of them to his middle son.

1/3 x 18 = 6

Oldest son’s

Middle son’s

Finally, he gives his youngest son 1/9 of the horses.

1/9 x 18 = 2

Oldest son’s

Middle son’s

Youngest son’s
