  1. ACHA Medical Coverage Survey Dan Morris, Markéta Schüblová Ohio University

  2. THANK YOU Thanks to all who participated in this survey and made it possible. Special thanks to Brian Moran for helping with the survey distribution. The purpose of this survey was to investigate the medical coverage provided to student-athletes competing in ACHA.

  3. A-E (D1)= 30(pl)*31.2 (gm)*2.7 (pt) * 20(wks) = 50,544 Athlete – Exposures/Season

  4. A-E (D2) = 30 (pl)*26.4 (gm) = 793 (14 inj)

  5. A-E (D3) = 30(pl)*23(gm) = 460(4inj)

  6. A-E (DW) = 30(pl)*21.5(gm)=645 (1.2inj)

  7. Medical Coverage for Home Games

  8. Medical Coverage for Practices ATC/Physician

  9. How are they paid?

  10. Where is the money coming from?

  11. Who Provides First Aid? Other: player, rink staff, parents, EMT/EMS, team managers 11 out of 24 coaches providing first aid had no certification

  12. Final Thought Decision about medical coverage of student-athlete participation should be based on the potential for serious or catastrophic injury, not on gender, sport profile or level of competition. Ice hockey is classified as a sport with increased risk (based on combined injury risk and catastrophic index) where certified athletic trainer should be at all practices. Unfortunately, based on the data collected in this study many universities and colleges are lacking in providing appropriate medical coverage to student athletes competing on club ice hockey teams in ACHA. http://www.ncaa.org/library/sports_sciences/sports_med_handbook/2005-06/2005-06_sports_medicine_handbook.pdf http://www.unc.edu/depts/nccsi/AllSport.htm http://www.nata.org/publicinformation/files/amciarecs%20andguidesrevised.pdf
