  1. Tips to Get Started with Estate Planning

  2. Building a goodestate plan will ensure that your assets go where you want after your demise. But, if you are not sure how to get started, here are a few tips.

  3. Create a Deadline Set a deadline to create an estate plan since everyone acts quickly when there is a deadline. Give yourself enough time to gather the information you will need to create a will, confer with your attorney, and have the plan completed. But, choose a date that is not too far.

  4. Gather Financial Information List all your assets and investments, showing their current market value, debts against them, and net values. Start a physical file where you place deeds and current statements, so you can show them to your attorney.

  5. Choose an Executor When choosing an executor, find someone outside of the family, such as a professional lawyer or an accountant. The executor should be someone you trust, whose judgment you respect, and who will carry out your wishes.

  6. Select Your Attorney An estate attorney will help guide you through several issues such as a living will. They will also make sure that documents are drafted properly according tostate laws, and that the language is structured in a way that makes your wishes clear to your executor and heirs.
