  2. Background • GTP is specified and deployed for 3GPP release 99 • 3GPP is looking for ways to incorporate Mobile IP into their protocol framework • Mobile IP ad hoc study group has recommended inclusion for new 3GPP release • We should try to encourage this development

  3. Main Motivation • GTP should be allowable as a Mobile IP tunneling mechanism • GTP should become a Proposed Standard • satisfies criteria of interoperability • any changes from working group would be submitted to 3GPP

  4. Packet Format • 32 bit tunnel identifier • Optional sequence number • Protocol type field • version number, bits controlling optional fields, length • 8 bytes typical for IP • UDP port 3386
