  2. Where and When • July 20 - August 9, 2008 • Ciudad Colon, Costa Rica • Costa Rica is a tropical country in Central America, world-wide known for its respect of nature, and human rights, peace and democracy.

  3. Where exactly? • Loyola’s program is based at the campus of the University for Peace. It is located about 22 miles west of San Jose, the nation’s capital.

  4. The Campus • Classes are held at the campus of the University for Peace (Universidad para la paz, http://www.upeace.org/), the only degree-giving institution of the United Nations

  5. The Campus • UPeace campus is modern and has all facilities (full wi-fi connectivity, great classrooms, library and computer center, cafeteria, infirmary). • The campus is within a natural reserve composed of a secondary forest and the last remnant of primary forest (1.200 ha) in the Central Valley of Costa Rica

  7. Courses Offered • International Protection of Human Rights (2 credits) – Prof. Cesare Romano (LLS) • International Environmental Law (2 credits) –Prof. Ruth MacKenzie (University College London)

  8. Schedule • Classes meet every day M-F for three weeks in the mornings. 1h 30m of IEL and 1h 30 m of HR. Classes are over by 12 PM.

  9. Week-ends • 1st week-end: Field-trip. • 2nd week-end: Free

  10. Taking a break from hard work…

  11. Lodging • Students are lodged with local families in Ciudad Colon. You get to know the local culture, make new friends and if you speak Spanish can practice (and if you do not… they speak English!) • Those wishing to opt out housing with families will have a $600 reimbursement towards hotel costs

Cost • $3,500 tuition, which covers • 4 credits • Lodging • Meals (breakfast and dinner with family and lunch at UPeace) • Shuttle to/from UPeace and Ciudad Colon • Week-end Field Trip + Field Trip during the week to the Inter-American Court fo Human Rights • Reading materials • Final Fiesta!

  13. In sum.. • Veeeery cheap. 4 credits, all expenses included at $3,500 is a bargain! • If you do not study IEL and HR in Costa Rica where else? • Only 5 hour flight away from LA … but a world away. • Great place to hang out before and after the course (not to mention during…)
