  4. Laying the Foundation Mark out the area for the retaining wall and dig a trench that is at least 200mm deep and 200mm wide. Level the base of the trench and compact it with a plate compactor or hand tamper until it is firm and level. Add a layer of crushed rock to the base of the trench and compact it again to create a stable foundation for the retaining wall. www.notwood.com.au

  5. Installing the Sleepers Lay out the first course of sleepers on the compacted base, ensuring they are level and straight. Drill holes through the sleepers and into the ground below using a hammer drill. Insert steel reinforcing bars into the holes and secure them with concrete.
