The Yakisugi process is not just simply charring the wood; it can be brushed or oiled to achieve a desired look. There are three main products surface: Suyaki (original charred), Gendai (brushed once). And Pika-Pika (brushed twice).

Suyaki

Pika-Pika

Gendai

Suyaki original charred

Suyaki: Original Charred

Suyaki is the original Shou Sugi Ban product, known as “alligator” in the Japan. This heavily Charred wood surface is long lasting and need not to polish or brush. This Yakisugi product can be left untouched after burn at high degree of flame treatment and mostly used for exteriors of house and office. Without brushing this Japanese Burnt Cedar looks beautiful and attractive. It always looks black or silver with a rainbow effervescence depending on which angle it is viewed from, and is oiled or top-coated to solidify the surface and reduce soot dispersion.

Gendai brushed once

Gendai: Brushed once

Gendai surface ids brushed once to give unique looks and is most commonly used charred wood. The Japanese shou sugi ban wood surface goes under high flame treatment as Suyaki, brushed once to solidify the surface and make it dark, smooth, and silky look. It can be used for both interior and exterior. Gendai is most commonly specified of surface in Japan as well as in North America. Gendai will take stains but will always be dark

Pika pika brushed twice

Pika-Pika: Brushed Twice

Pika-Pika also starts with heavy char, but is brushed twice to achieve attractive stripe pattern. The second brushing removes all charring from the surface and makes it plain, smooth and shiny. Pika-Pika is wonderful choice for the interior of house and office. Pika-Pika takes stains while retaining the warmth of Yakisugi. It is most commonly used in Japan as well in USA and Canada.
