  1. Things to Know About CNC Machines

  2. What is a CNC Machine The word “CNC” stands for Computer Numerical Control. The CNC machine comprises of the mini computer or the microcomputer that acts as the controller unit of the machine.

  3. How a CNC Machine Works The machine relies on digital instructions from a CAM or CAD file. It interprets the drawing as instructions for cutting parts. Automated cuts improve speed and accuracy.

  4. Types of CNC Machines Lathes– For production of 3D shapes/molds; automatically programmed tool changes Milling– Most widely used CNC machines; predominantly for face milling and peripheral milling. Plasma Cutters– Utilized for cutting 2D shapes remove and molds; need less power than routers Laser Cutters – Operate similar to plasma cutters, using a laser instead of a plasma torch

  5. Continued…. Routers– Used for cutting complex/intricate shapes and prototypes from metal sheets 5-axis– CNC machining is done along three perpendicular axes and two rotary axes 6-axis– CNC machining is done along three perpendicular axes and three rotary axes

  6. Advantages of CNC Machines • Increased Productivity • Consistent Quality • Automatic Material handling • High Accuracy • Reliable operation • Reduced Manpower • Increased Operation Safety

  7. Challenges Associated With CNC Machines • Costly setup • Requires high-level operation skills • Complex maintenance & support • Constant upgradation
