Sustainable life-cycle management of ICT Equipment and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) • Fact: Innovation and IP protection are directly linked to the development of new ICT technologies and Equipment • Question: What is the role of technology, innovation and IP in E-waste management? • WIPO Patent Landscape Report looks at the IP perspective of Recycling End-of Life ICT Equipment

  5. Background of the Report • What is a Patent Landscape Report? • Patent-based analysis of a specific technology field (Who? Is doing what? Where? (Since) when? With whom?) • Information structured and presented in an easy for non experts in IP and/or the subject matter • Facilitate interdisciplinary dialogue for decision making • WIPO Patent Landscape Reports (PLR): • Development Agenda Project « Developing Tools for Access to Patent Information » launched in 2010 (since 2014: regular WIPO activity) http://www.wipo.int/patentscope/en/programs/patent_landscapes

Background of the Report (2) • Cooperation with the Basel Convention Secretariat: • Basel Convention Partnership Programme: active involvement of industry, business organizations, NGOs necessary to reach Basel Convention goals • Technical Guidelines on Material Recovery and Recycling of End-of-Life Mobile Phones (MPPI) and Computing Equipment (PACE) • Objective of the Patent Landscape Report: • complement Guidelines • raise IP awareness, show innovation, patenting trends and technologies related to E-waste recycling
