Food for Thought…. How serious is sin? What happens if someone refuses to believe God and chooses to disobey Him? Does that man’s sin affect others? Can man fix his own sin problem? If God is all-loving, won’t He accept any sincere effort we make to come to Him?. Review.

  1. Food for Thought… • How serious is sin? • What happens if someone refuses to believe God and chooses to disobey Him? • Does that man’s sin affect others? • Can man fix his own sin problem? • If God is all-loving, won’t He accept any sincere effort we make to come to Him?

  2. Review • God rejected Adam and Eve’s clothes • God killed an animal and made clothes for Adam and Eve • God clothed Adam and Eve with the animal skin • God was demonstrating how man is to come to God

  3. Review • Cain and Abel were born outside of the Garden. They were born into sin because of the the sin of Adam! • All humans are born into sin and thus separated from God. • Sin’s punishment is death • Nothing we do can make us right with God.

  4. God’s Plan for Man • God made a plan for Adam & Eve to come to Him. • The plan did not originate with man!!! • God made a way for them because He loved them!

  5. God Communicated His Plan God Adam & Eve Cain & Abel

  6. God’s Plan • The blood of the lambs could not pay for their sin; why then would God tell them to kill a sheep? • As a reminder that the punishment for sin is death! • He wanted them to remember that they would die and go to everlasting punishment, unless He saved them.

  7. God’s Plan • If they agreed with God that they were sinners and that only He could save them from everlasting punishment, then they were to bring a sheep and kill it, as God told them to do!

  8. God’s Plan • Read Leviticus 17:11 • God promised that if they came by faith, offering to Him the blood of animals, He would accept them and forgive their sins. • Read Hebrews 9:22 • Blood sacrifice for sin was part of God’s gracious plan to deliver man from sin, death, and Satan.

  9. Cain and Abel Coming to God • Read Genesis 4:3-5 • Both Cain and Abel believed in the existence of God, and both came to offer sacrifices to Him! • Represent two types of people: • Those who come to God their own way • Those who believe God and come to God His way

  10. Cain and Abel Coming to God • Abel brought for his offering • Firstborn lamb of its mother • Fat portions of the lamb • Abel killed the sheep so its blood ran out, and he offered the sheep to God

  11. Cain and Abel Coming to God • Why did Abel bring this offering? • He agreed with God that he was a sinner and that only God could save him • He believed the promise God had given to his parents (Adam & Eve) • As a result of Abel’s faith (demonstrated by bringing the proper offering) God was pleased with the offering and Abel was accepted by God!

  12. Cain and Abel Coming to God • Did the blood of Abel’s sacrificed lamb pay for Abel’s sin and make Abel right in God’s eyes? • No…sin must be paid for by human death!! • Abel was forgiven his sin by God because Abel trusted in God who had promised to send the Deliverer!

  13. Cain and Abel Coming to God • Read Genesis 4:5 • God did not accept Cain nor his offering • Why not… • Because the things Cain grew were not good? • Because God doesn’t like things from the ground? • Cain was more of a sinner than Abel?

  14. Cain and Abel Coming to God • Consider Hebrews 11:4 & 6 • 11:4 - By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did. • 11:6 - Without faith, it is impossible to please God. • Where does faith come from? Consider Romans 10:17 • Faith comes from hearing God’s Word

  15. Cain and Abel Coming to God • Conclusions: • Coming to God anyway other than the way He clearly tells us by His Word is SIN and God will reject us • Why was Abel accepted? He proved His faith by coming to God the way God had told him to

  16. Cain and Abel Coming to God • Conclusions: • To think that offering a blood sacrifice was Abel’s idea is contrary to scripture. • God does not accept anything that man does in does trying to come to God!

  17. Cain and Abel Coming to God • Read Genesis 4:7 • Cain knew the right sacrifice to bring, but he chose to come his own way, according to his own ideas. • Cain did not believe God. He did not come admitting that he was a sinner (because he did not bring a blood sacrifice) • Therefore: God rejected Cain!!

  18. Cain and Abel Coming to God • Abel’s faith resulted in Abel bringing the right sacrifice to God • Cain’s unbelief resulted in Cain bringing the wrong sacrifice to God • Faith leads to action that is pleasing to God. Unbelief leads to action that is rejected by God.

  19. Cain and Abel Coming to God • Just like trying to reattach a dead branch to a tree and expecting the tree to “nourish the branch”… • People try to “reattach” themselves to God, expecting that He will nourish them.

  20. GOD’S WAY People Today Coming to God

  21. Check for Understanding • Why was Abel and his sacrifice acceptable to God? Why was Cain and his sacrifice not acceptable? • Looking at the parable in Matthew 21:28-32, which son was accepted by the father, the one with the right attitude or the wrong attitude? Explain.

  22. God Reasoned with Cain • Read Genesis 4:6-7 • How was God’s love and mercy shown to Cain? • How was faith a part of God’s reasoning with Cain?

  23. God Reasoned with Cain • Read Genesis 4:8 • Who’s idea was it to kill Abel? Where did it come from? • When people refuse to listen to God, it often leads to others getting hurt…sometimes even dying. • How does James 1:14-15 apply here?

  24. God Reasoned with Cain • Read Genesis 4:9 • Why did God ask Cain if he killed Abel when God already knew? • He was giving another opportunity to repent… man God is merciful!!

  25. God Will Avenge all Sin • Read Genesis 4:10-15 • Even though Cain chose to disobey God, God was still Cain’s Creator • God still owns all people even though Satan stole us away from God. • God had the right to punish those who would hurt Cain, even if Cain chose to walk away from God!

  26. God Will Avenge all Sin • All sin will finally be punished by God, for He is the rightful owner of every person.

  27. God Will Avenge all Sin • Read Genesis 4:16 • Cain would not listen to God and would not agree with God that he was wrong. • Cain did not change his attitude towards his sin • Cain did not repent! • As a result of his attitude not being right, He went away from God and followed Satan.

  28. Cain’s Effect on his Descendants • Cain’s descendants followed his example • They built towns, raised cattle, made tools and musical instruments • None of these are bad things, BUT… • When they exclude and replace God, they become a bad things… • They had not interest and time for God and the things He wanted them to know.

  29. Cain’s Effect on his Descendants • We are responsible, not only for ourselves, but also for our children! • We need to learn from God’s Word and be teaching our children to learn and understand God’s Word. • It makes a huge difference….Sue (Revolutionary kids)?

  30. God’s Plan Continued… • Read Genesis 4:25 • God gave Adam and Eve another son Seth to replace Abel • Satan tried to deter God’s plan of bringing the Promised Redeemer…BUT God’s plans can not be stopped!!! • God now planned to bring the deliverer through Seth!

  31. Checking for Understanding • What was Cain’s response to God’s counsel to do that which was right? • Is it possible for two people to do the exact same things and one person be right and the other be wrong? • What is always the end result of sin?

  32. Conclusion • We must come to God the way He instructs, not the way we want to come. • Abel was accepted because he believed God and came on God’s terms • Cain was rejected because he did not believe God and came his own way!! • God’s plans can not be halted!
