Alternative tourism
Alternative Tourism

The alternative forms of tourism combine tourist products or separate tourist services different from the mass tourism by means of supply, organization and the human resource involved.

These are rural, ecotourism, adventure (biking, horseback riding, snowshoeing, ski mountaineering, rafting, diving, caving, climbing), thematic tourism – connected with the cultural and historical heritage, the esoteric, religion, wine, traditional cuisine, ethnography and traditional music and handicrafts.

Sustainable tourism
Sustainable tourism

Sustainable tourism is a new category and is a continuation of the conception for sustainable development which was launched at the conference in Rio in 1993. It is a result of the concerns to the protection of endangered regions on the planet as a whole and in particular the tropical woods. However, it treats urban and rural regions, cultural and historical heritage as well and consequently has broader coverage than ecotourism.

Sustainable tourism’s objective is minimizing tourism influence on the local environment through promoting its conception to tourists before and during their holiday as well as provoking nature conservation practices ever since the conception stage in the outgoing sector.

Agritourism as a part of sustainable tourism
Agritourism as a part of sustainable tourism

Agritourism is the form of tourism which capitalizes on rural cultureas a tourist attraction. It is similar to ecotourism except that itsprimary appeal is not the natural landscape but a cultural landscape. If the attractions on offer to tourists contribute to improving theincome of the regional population, agritourism can promote regionaldevelopment. To ensure that it also helps to conserve diversity, therural population itself must have recognized agrobiodiversity asvaluable and worthy of protection.”

Definition of rural tourism
Definition of Rural Tourism

Any form of tourism that showcases the rural life, art, culture and heritage at rural locations, thereby benefiting the local community economically and socially as well as enabling interaction between the tourists and the locals for a more enriching tourism experience can be termed as rural tourism. Rural tourism is essentially an activity which takes place in the countryside. It is multi-faceted and may entail farm/agricultural tourism, cultural tourism, nature tourism, adventure tourism, and eco-tourism. As against conventional tourism, rural tourismhas certain typical characteristics, like it is experience oriented, the locations are sparsely populated, it is predominantly in natural environment, it meshes with seasonality and local events and is based on preservation of culture, heritage and traditions.

In other definitions, howeverrural tourism and agritourism is a synonym

Rural tourism involves tourists witnessing or participating in activities that form the core of country life such as farming (synonyms: farm tourism, agrotourism /agritourism). Loosely defined it can encompass any activity that takes place in a non-urban, populated area. With farm incomes dwindling in many "developed", but also "developing" countries, and people migrating to cities or abroad, rural tourism is often seen by planners as a magic wand to stop rural decay

  • Agritourism is a form of alternative to mass tourism based on sustainability, preservation of culture, heritage and traditions in rural areas.

It comprises all forms of tourism in which tourists visit farms and in rural villages, eventually board in them, and experience farming and various forms of rural life at close hand. It aims at bringing the visitor in touch with the naturalenvironment, agricultural activities, local products, and acommunity’s lifestyle, while at the same time contributing to the host area economic stability
