  1. Session 3 Conceptual Model

  2. Session Objectives Prepare a conceptual model that illustrates: • The current situational dynamics at play in a selected project site (demographic, social, environment dynamics) • The causal linkages and assumptions between the factors.

  3. Designing a PHE Approach • Social and environmental factors linked to food insecurity in coastal Philippines

  4. Building a Conceptual Framework • Vision – the goal or desired conditions (targets) at the site which the project aims to influence • Factors include direct threats, indirect threats, and opportunities • Each factor has one or more stakeholders associated with it

  5. Conceptual Model: IPOPCORM Project ECO-HUMAN HEALTH Lack of Access to Family Planning High Fertility Large Family Size Food Security Over Fishing Traditions & Preferences Desire for More Children High Population Growth Need to Generate Income Fish Availability Destructive and Illegal Fishing & Environment Practices Labor Intensive Migration Stable Marine Ecosystems Pollution Poor Rural Economy Reliance on Resource Extraction Lack of Alternative Livelihoods Weak Enforcement

  6. Target Indirect Threat Direct Threat Food Insecurity Lack of Access To FP High Fertility Large Family Size Traditions & Preferences Desire For More Children Creating Causal Chains Opportunity

  7. Creating Causal Chains Food Insecurity Lack of Alternative Livelihood Decline in Fish Production and Availability Reliance on Resource Extraction Need to Generate Income Over fishing And Destructive Fishing Ecosystem Degraded Weak Enforcement

  8. Conceptual Model: Nepal PHE Project HEALTHY FORESTS HEALTHY COMMUNITIES Lack of Knowledge And Access to FP High Fertility Large Family Size Income Security Lack of HIV Prevention Knowledge Risk of AIDS / HIV Desire for More Children Seasonal Migration to India Traditions & Preferences Human Health Traditional Cooking Stoves Indoor Air Pollution Acute Respiratory Infections Stable Forest Ecosystems Over Harvest of Trees Loss of Forests & Species Degraded Ecosystems & Declining Services Forest Dependent Economy

  9. Causal ChainNepal Conceptual Framework Unstable Forest Ecosystems Over Harvest of Trees Forest Dependent Economy Degraded Ecosystems & Declining Services Loss of Forests & Species Human Sickness & Death Traditions & Preferences Traditional Cooking Stoves Indoor Air Pollution Acute Respiratory Infections (pneumonia)

  10. TEAM TASK – Conceptual Model • Create a conceptual model of the situation your current project addresses and include the problem/issue you want your expanded project to address: • First, determine the overall vision for your expanded project and your overarching targets, then • Identify opportunities and threats. Map them to show causal relationships. Use arrows to show the linkages. • Use packet of cards and dots to map your model on flipchart. • Make a list of the data gaps. Time: 60 minutes Note: In 15 minutes, the trainers will check your Vision-Target part of the model
