For A. Curtis’s GIS class
A brief look at bike racks on LSU’s campus
Are there enough racks?
Are they in the right places?
Bike Rack Locations
0 – 10 bikes
11 – 20 bikes
21 – 40 bikes
17 bikes on the rail
1 - 4 bikes
5 - 9 bikes
10 - 20 bikes
Where there’s bikes, there’s students
Where there’s racks, there’s not necessarily bikes…
Do the densities for bikes and racks correlate?
Are they properly located?
It’s best if the rack is within 30 seconds walking-distance from the rider’s destination (about 35 meters)
30 second walk
60 second walk
Out of 30-second range
According to the campus master plan, there should be a 327% increase in bike riders if bike paths are created.
Racks can hold 10 - 12 bikes each, if properly placed
- When put against a wall, a rack can only hold 7-8
8 bikes per rack is a desirable target
- Allows for unexpected peaks in use
More than 8 bikes per rack

Coates - Union
Dark blue area shows high proportion of bikes to racks
Add 5+ racks
Add 1 - 4 racks
