Background and methods The increasing amount of information on substance abuse, its dispersion, and the need for appropriate filtering and dissemination, requires the development of systems of information easily accessible that provides users with the information needed to update their knowledge, and develop their research and practice. The aim of this study is to design and develop, in a web environment, an information system on substance abuse in Spanish. After evaluating the needs of information interviewing a sample of physicians, psychologists, social workers, teachers and students (n=32 participans), a focus group (n=8 participants) decided the themes, material and services to be offered: documents to be compiled, bibliographic data bases to be developed, journals subscriptions, access to external resources, publications and services, as well as web site requirements Results • Database CENDOC-Bogani of preventive resources, scientific bibliography, web resources, posters and triptychs with more than 30,000 registries. • Loan of books and other documents. • Selective diffusion of information (SDI) • Agenda of events. • 95.264 visits in 2008 • Users: 57% were psychologists and physicians, 18% students, 12.5% guidance counsellors and 7% social workers.
