  2. What is Hernia ? • Ahernia is a condition in which we have weakness or our • abdominal wall opens that often results in bulging of fat or an • organ such as the intestine occupies space under the skin. The • opening in the abdominal wall through which the fat or organs • put off is called the Hernia defect. • Hernia can affect anybody. Statistically, one-in-ten of us will have • a hernia at some point in our lives. It is found in both genders, • can occur at any age, and sometimes babies may be born with it. • Hernia Surgery is one of the most commonly performed • operations worldwide with millions of cases being treated every • year. https://medstarhc.com/

  3. Symptoms of a hernia • A hernia may first appear as a new clump or swell in the groin or the abdominal area. There may be connected dry aches but usually, it is not painful on touch. The clump increases in size on standing, coughing, and may be pushed back/disappear on lying down. • If we don’t treat the hernia at the initial stage, its size increases. At the initial stage of hernia, it appears small and painless. Sometimes, the hernia may become irreducible i.e. it cannot return to the abdominal cavity on lying down or with manual pushing. At this stage it also becomes painful. • Sometimes herniated loop of the bowel becomes obstructed. This can cause extreme pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, and needs immediate treatment. At times, the hernia becomes ‘strangulated’ (explained further below) in which the person appears unwell with/without fever, nausea, vomiting, and extreme pain even to touch. This condition is life-threatening so surgery is required. https://medstarhc.com/

  4. Causes of Hernia :- • In most cases, there is no fixed reason for a hernia to occur. The risk of hernia increases with age and occurs more commonly in men than in women. • A hernia can be native (present at birth) or develop in children who have a weakness in their abdominal wall. • Activities and medical problems that increase pressure on the abdominal wall can suffer a hernia. These include :- • Stretching on the toilet (For Example - Due to long-term constipation) • Preserve cough • Enlarged prostate • Stretching to urinate • Being overweight or obese • Abdominal fluid • Lifting heavy items • Peritoneal dialysis • Poor nutrition • Smoking • Physical exertion https://medstarhc.com/

  5. Diagnosis of Hernia :- • The diagnosis of hernia is usually done by clinical method which means that your doctor will first look at your history of your symptoms and then he/she will move forward to a brief physical examination. During this check up she/he may feel the area of bump by increasing your abdominal pressure (this is done by making you stand/cough), as this operation makes the hernia more obvious. • If you have an inguinal hernia, the doctor will think for the potential pathway by examining along your scrotum. In short, in vast majority of cases where there is an obvious swelling in the groin/abdominal area, which rises in size on standing, straining or coughing, a clinical diagnosis of hernia is made and no tests are needed. More challenging diagnoses are best performed by hernia specialists. https://medstarhc.com/

  6. Treatment of Hernia :- • The aim of a hernia surgery is to repair the weak material in the abdominal wall and seal the defect so that fat or intestines cannot push through it again. Depending upon the applicable surgical approach, there are two types of repairs; First is an open repair and second is Laparoscopic (Keyhole) repair. • In an Open surgery, a single long cut is made in the area of the hernia. The herniated organs are pushed back in place and the area is then sutured back with/without placing a trap to strengthen the weak area of the abdomen. • Laparoscopic repair work in the same way as open repair, only the difference is that instead of a single long cut, several small (3-5) nicks are made each being about a centimeter long. A laparoscopic repair is done under general anesthesia and it has more benefits like a quicker recovery, lesser post-operative pain and lower infection rate. Although, a laparoscopic repair may not be possible if you have a large hernia or you can’t receive general anesthesia. • While the doctor is treating you they notice a few things and then they treats you accordingly. The things includes location/type/severity of hernia as well as your medical history. https://medstarhc.com/
