  3. Inpatient Detoxification for Drug and Alcohol Dependency When an addict needs to rid their system of addictive substances, there are predominantly two options; either in or outpatient facilities. Detox involves taking time away from your drug of choice, in order to give your body and mind time to heal. The importance of detox stems from the fact that with continuous abuse of the said substances, one may never be able to fully stop its usage.

  4. Inpatient Detoxification for Drug and Alcohol Dependency These detox measures give individuals a chance to clean up, while under the supervision of medical staff and skilled counsellors. Unlike outpatient detox facilities and programs, inpatient detox not only weans the addict from their drug of choice, it removes access of the same.

  5. Programs Offered For Inpatient Admission These programs can run anywhere from a few days to a full three months. A shorter stay is more common for most individuals who are seeking to simply rid their systems of toxic substances and resume their activities, e.g. jobs and the like. When an addict is placed in such a clinic for a period that is 30 days or less, some insurance companies offer coverage during that period.

  6. Programs Offered For Inpatient Admission Rehabilitation centers and professionals recommend 30 days as the shortest period for any detox program. That being said, most centers will offer full-time residency services that range anywhere from 30 days to a year, with 30-90 days being the most common.

  7. Detoxing: What It Entails To put inpatient detox into perspective, it entails a more thorough approach to dealing with a compromised health system due to drugs or alcohol. During the period that one is housed in such a facility, stress factors that usually contribute to the patient’s abuse of their said drugs are dealt with. This involves removing access of these substances from their immediate environment as well as counselling them on how to deal with these obstacles, known as triggers, once they are released from the controlled environment and into the public. Some of these triggers may be family, work, social life and of course relationships.

  8. Of paramount importance is the staff that is readily available, usually 24 hours a day, to deal with withdrawals from substance abuse. Alcohol abuse has the severest of these withdrawals, which include but are not limited to: seizures and hallucinations as well as delirium tremens (DT’s). In worst case scenarios, withdrawal from alcohol abuse can lead to death, which is why it is crucial that an addict be admitted for inpatient as opposed to outpatient treatment.

  9. Recommendations In-house treatment centers range in price and comfort, from the most basic ones that simply get you in and out, with minimal supervision and/or counselling, to the more luxurious ones that may even cater for celebrities. At the root of it all, these centers provide 24 hours residency for their patients, with a tailor-made program for each individual based on their drug of choice. It is recommended that addicts who have attempted a rehab program before, and experienced a relapse thereafter, should be admitted in a program that lasts no fewer than 90 days.

  10. While looking for a rehab center may primarily boil down to what one can afford, it is important to take note of the credentials of the staff. This includes how competent the medical staff is to handle your exact symptoms, which may require to perform research regarding those who may have visited the facility before and found it to be useful. Many centers will offer activities such as yoga classes, writing or journaling, and of course meditation times. All these activities are meant to introduce new ideas and pastimes for the addict, possibly making room for new hobbies once they leave the institution.

  11. Benefits of Full-Time Treatment These full-time residency facilities offer a life-line for addicts who may have hit rock bottom and have no immediate, competent help available to them. A quiet and controlled environment such as is offered in these facilities provides invaluable assistance to those who have attempted all measures of reform, and still find themselves at their wits end. Last but not least, admission into an inpatient detox program makes for an easier transition back into the real world.

  12. Unlike a week-long program, once the patient is released from the clinic, they will have taken time to know what their triggers are, weaned (methodically) from their drug of choice and have access to half-way houses that they can utilize as a cushion as they re-enter society, with no limitations as to what they can access and possibly, they may go back to facing their triggers head-on.

  13. It is recommended that one looks at what they will be gaining from this rehabilitation program rather than the cost or the duration of their stay. For those who may have undergone prolonged use of a drug or alcohol, the measures needed to alleviate the toxicity done to the body and mind will need to be intensive for there to be positive results, and this is what inpatient detox offers.
