  3. Introduction • If you tear the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in your knee, you may need to have reconstructive surgery. The ACL is a tough band of tissue joining the thigh bone to the shin bone at the knee joint. It runs diagonally through the inside of the knee and gives the knee joint stability.

  4. Symptoms • A loud pop or a "popping" sensation in the knee. • Severe pain and inability to continue activity. • Rapid swelling. • Loss of range of motion. • A feeling of instability or "giving way" with weight bearing.

  5. Causes • ACL reconstruction is surgery to replace a torn anterior cruciate (KROO-she-ate) ligament (ACL)  a major ligament in your knee. ACL injuries most commonly occur during sports that involve sudden stops and changes in direction — such as soccer, football, basketball and volleyball.

  6. Treatment • During ACL reconstruction, the surgeon removes the damaged ligament and replaces it with a segment of tendon — tissue similar to a ligament that connects muscle to bone. This replacement tissue is called a graft. Your surgeon will use a piece of tendon from another part of your knee or a tendon from a deceased donor.
