How to Pack and Move a TV

A flat-screen television is often not bulky or heavy, leaving people to assume they are easier to relocate. Unfortunately, that assumption is very wrong! Flat-screen televisions are fragile and more prone to damage compared to other electrical items found in your home. This makes it even harder to move from one home to another. If you are not hiring professional removalists, you may want to use these tips to pack your television well, and make it less prone to damage.

  2. Most electrical appliances are either heavy or bulky, which makes them difficult to move. Whilst flat-screen TVs are often not bulky nor heavy, they are fragile and are more prone to damage compared to other electrical items which make them harder to relocate. Whether you're using a TV set that is mounted on a wall or you're using stands, you need to take additional safety measures when dismantling and packing your TV. You will need: Packing tape Cable Ties Packing bags Bubble wrap Moving blanket or thick blankets (with no zippers, buttons, seams or any materials that could scratch the tv) If the original box is no longer available: Wardrobe box Box cutter

  3. 01Dismantle the TV If you did not book for packing services or you're opting for a DIY move, it's recommended that you take a picture of the TV set up before you start dismantling your tv set. You can use this as a guide when you're ready to reassemble and set up your tv in your new home. Start by removing delicate parts or plastic pieces, stands or wall mounts before packing the television.

  4. 02Clean and organise removed parts Wipe or remove visible dust and dirt, then set aside the base, cords, and other parts that you have removed from your tv set. Roll cords into coils and use cable ties to keep them secured and avoid entangling with other cords. You can use clear plastic or packing bags to hold all the parts together. If needed, you may label the parts to make it easier to put them back when you move.

  5. 03Prepare and pack your TV for moving Wipe visible dust or dirt and make sure that the TV, especially the screen is clean. This can help prevent any scratches when the tv is packed and moved from one location to another. If you have the original box: If the original box and its packing contents are still in good condition, you can use these to pack your TV more safely since these materials are made for this purpose. Spread a blanket over a flat surface and place the TV at the centre with the screen facing down. You may also use a protective sleeve or any packing material that came with the tv. Use the foam pieces for additional protection, place the first two at the top of the TV and secure them with plastic or shrink wrap, then add the remaining two at the bottom. For a more secure wrap, place the foams with the tv standing upright. If you don't have the original box: Get a moving box that can provide 2-3 inches of extra space on all sides with the TV inside. You can use moving blankets, regular blankets or comforters to wrap and securely pack your flat-screen TV. Thick blankets and towels can also be used as padding without scratching the screen or damaging any part of the TV.

  6. 04Seal the box and add appropriate labels As an additional precaution, do not place the accessories and stand inside the box. Instead, use a packing bag or resealable plastic that you can tape outside the box or place in other containers holding other electrical items. Seal the box using high-quality packing tape and put a "Fragile" label so removalists or your helpers will be extra careful in lifting the box, especially if you’re not using the original box. You may also add labels to indicate the front, screen, or top making it easier to determine the most delicate area of the box.

  7. 05Consider the placement in the container Once you've decided on which items you're taking with you, plan the placement of the items in the moving vehicle. Position the box containing the TV safely in the vehicle, keeping it away from heavy items or pieces that could easily fall if the vehicle passes through rough roads or is put under pressure while taking tight corners.
