Why Libraries Need to be Aware of Web 2.0 • Staying relevant • Meeting your users where they are • Knowing what is out there and the dangers as well as the possibilities. • Increasing accessibility • Increasing your productivity • Having more time • Increasing your knowledge of web 2.0 will help you to make thoughtful policy decisions concerning your library and public access.

  4. Blogs • Originally used for online journaling • Other uses include: • Reference questions • Newsletters • Book discussions • Book reviews

  6. Wikis • Wikis are interactive websites that all users can create content for or edit. • Excellent for collaboration • Easy to set up • Even people who don’t “get” computers can work a wiki!

  7. Library Wikis • Collaboration within an organization • Collaboration among many organizations • Replacing the web page • Generating ideas for an event

  8. Aggregators Aggregators are online sites that collect wide-ranging information in one place. There are aggregators for bookmarks, instant messaging sites, and blogs.

  9. Library uses of Aggregators • Use Bloglines to track library blogs of interest to the library staff or users. • Use Meebo to instant message staff. • Use del.icio.us to keep track of your bookmarks… or the library staff bookmarks or TCULA bookmarks!

  10. Flickr • An on-line photo management tool that allows you to add and share photos • A social network site at which people subscribe to groups with “like” interests and photos Not this kind of Flicker!
