  1. Dogs And Ear Cropping Responsible pet owners make sure that their animals are afforded the necessary care to be happy and content. This includes feeding them, providing a safe, dry, warm place where they can rest and sleep, and a place where they can play and where you can exercise them. For many it goes beyond the mentioned issues. Think, for example, of the individual or family that takes their dog for an ear crop procedure in Colorado and elsewhere. All over America, in Colorado, in California, Florida and everywhere else there are dog owners that have this procedure done for their very own, valid reasons. The procedure is normally carried out on puppies before they turn 3 months old, as at this stage it is less traumatic for the animal, and wounds heal quicker. ARE CERTAIN BREEDS MORE SUITED TO EAR CROPPING THAN OTHERS? When you look around you, you will realize that certain breeds lend themselves to ear cropping more than others, which is why breeds such as Doberman Pinchers, Boxers, certain Terriers, Schnauzers and some Mastiff breeds are often those whose ears are cropped. There are some practical considerations for this, as well as reasons of choice by the owner, such as wanting to create a specific look. WHY DOG OWNERS OPT FOR EAR CROPPING In a country such as the US there are many dog owners that believe in this procedure for various reasons. Some may not support the idea of ear cropping or ear trimming, but there are many thousands in full support of having this procedure carried out. There are different reasons to consider this procedure. •For medical reasons many dog owners decide that a dog with trimmed ears is the solution to a number of issues. For example, certain dogs with large, floppy ears may develop ear infections because the ear entrance can easily be blocked off from natural sunlight, or an owner being able to check the inside of the ear for, say, infection because bacteria, insects and pests go undetected. Often, when it is too late, owners become aware of the problem, which then leads to unpleasant treatment and discomfort. •Also, and this comes from Roman times when dogs were used as working animals regularly, dogs are exposed to danger when they get attacked by other dogs or animals that could pose a threat, especially when it may be easy to rip off a dog’s ear. Therefore owners of certain breeds of working dogs, such as guard dogs, for example, opt for ear cropping. •Ear crop Colorado procedures are often carried out for aesthetic reasons, in other words to create a certain look. Dogs with pointy ears - and not soft and floppy – can look more alert and even mean, which is often a requirement by owners who use dogs to protect their homes and other locales such as factories and industrial properties, and often commercial properties in the business district. They serve, because of their threatening look, as a great deterrent for any potential criminal activity. THE PROCEDURE Any owner that considers ear cropping in Colorado, Texas, Alabama – anywhere in the US and further afield – should always only approach a registered, experienced vet that carries out these procedures all the time. Doing it yourself, or asking a friend with limited knowledge, can only lead to botched efforts – and trauma for the animal and its owner. Also remember not to subject your Yorkie, or your miniature Poodle or Spaniel or Pomeranian to this procedure. It is meant only for larger breeds, those you want to appear intimidating. The vet performs the procedure under general anesthesia and will, in consultation with the owner, crop the ears to a specific length and shape. Afterwards bandages help to keep the ears in an upright position, which is what the look is about. Follow- up visits should be scheduled for when, and if, they become necessary. Ear crop procedures remain popular in Colorado and many other states and are performed daily by experienced vets.
