  2. Isn't it agonising when a tooth throbs to wake you up all night? The pain in and around the teeth can be caused by accidental injury or infection. It usually strikes those having poor oral hygiene which further leads to dental abscess. 3. Symptoms of an Abscessed Tooth The main symptom of an abscessed tooth is severe throbbing pain which arises suddenly and gets worse because of the collected puss. However other symptoms must not be ignored: • Sensitivity to hot and cold temperature/beverages • Unbearable pain while chewing and biting, difficulty in opening mouth • Feeling unwell with a very high temperature • Swelled cheek, face or jaw • Tender/swollen lymph nodes • Severe pain despite taking painkillers like Ibuprofen • Foul taste when then abscess ruptures Call On: 9283 7220

  4. Preventive Measures Improper brushing of teeth and consuming lots of sugar and starchy food is the main cause of tooth infection which further leads to an abscessed tooth. To be on the safer side, make an appointment to the dentist to know the severity of the situation. A dentist will guide you through the treatment procedures and will identify the type of abscess you are facing i.e. Periapical abscess or Periodontal abscess. Generally the dentist will treat the abscess to drain the puss either with root canal treatment or gum treatment under local an aesthesia. The tooth infection can be prevented by maintaining oral hygiene and flossing. Using a mouthwash and following a healthy diet chart controls the infection to quite an extent. Quit smoking and sugary food, and see a drastic change in your oral hygiene. Apart from taking such preventive measures, regular dentist visits (every 6 months) are suggested by health experts Call On: 9283 7220

  5. For The Worst Case Scenarios If the pain is unbearable and painkillers and saltwater gargling are not really taking control of the situation, then you definitely need prompt medical attention. Contact your nearby dentist to know if it can be treated at the earliest, however if it is during night or a public holiday then you may need out-of-the hours emergency treatment by an emergency dentist or go to the emergency room at the nearest hospital. Meanwhile, make sure not to panic and apply pressure on the site until it is being treated. The injuries and infections can be potentially serious and you must stay prepared for it, ignoring might just increase the risk of damage. Call On: 9283 7220
