  3. Preschool Learning Foundations… are for all children including: • English learners and • Children with disabilities

Preschool Curriculum Framework • Information about how to support the high quality early learning and development described in the Preschool Learning Foundations (PLF) • An overall approach for teachers to support children’s learning through environments, relationships, and experiences that are: • Developmentally appropriate • Reflective of thoughtful observation and intentional planning • Individually and culturally meaningful • Inclusive of children with disabilities and other special needs

Curriculum Framework Guiding Principles Relationships are central Play is a primary context for learning Learning is integrated Responsiveness to culture and language supports children’s learning Individualization of learning includes all children Intentional teaching enhances children’s learning experiences Family and community partnerships create meaningful connections

  6. Released Feb. 2009 Are aligned with the preschool foundations Support an understanding of the developmental continuum for learning for children from birth through preschool Infant/Toddler Learning and Development Foundations

Infant/Toddler Learning and Development Foundations Include four domains: Social-emotional, Language development, Cognitive, and Perceptual and motor development Provide descriptions of competencies for children at around 8, 18, and 36 months Each age level enriched with examples of typical behaviors leading up to the foundation

  8. I/T Foundations and Framework I/T Foundations roll-out: introduced over time through the various activities of the Program for Infant/Toddler Care (PITC) The I/T Curriculum Framework: developed, release expectedearly 2010

Desired Results Assessment System • Designed to document the progress made by children and families in achieving desired results • Tested for reliability and validity • Observation-based tools to inform providers regarding children’s progress which in turn informs curriculum planning and program improvement • Not for statewide roll-up

  10. Desired Results Assessment System Components • Desired Results Developmental Profile (DRDP): assessment instrument based on teacher observations that measures children’s developmental progress. DRDP access:birth-to-five instrument that captures children’s progress who are not yet three years old developmentally • DR Parent Survey: to assess parent satisfaction with the early childhood program and to gain an understanding of families’ strengths and needs in supporting their children’s learning and development and in achieving their goals • Environment Rating Scale: to assess the learning environment

Desired Results Next Steps DRDP-R2 is being aligned with the I/T and Preschool Foundations, Volume 1 Will be introduced fall 2009 Will be required for CDD-funded programs in fall 2010 Will be aligned with future volumes of the preschool foundations The next aligned version of the DRDP will not be released for several years A school readiness instrument derived from the DRDP could be developed

Early Childhood Educator Competencies Partners: CDE and First 5 California Will describe core knowledge, skills and dispositions of early childhood educators working with children birth to five Will be aligned with the I/T and preschool learning foundations Will be included as a cornerstone of ECE professional development in California Will be used to update the Permit Matrix Expected to be completed by June 2010
