    1. Valerie KeatingAP Coordinator & Director of School CounselingJ.R. Tucker High SchoolHenrico County Public Schools Strategies for Increasing AP Enrollment

    3. Creating an AP Culture Advanced Placement coursework is expected of every student who plans to go to college. (*or put it this way – expected of every students whose parent expects that he or she will go to college). Introductory high school classes (VASS calls these pre-AP!) are preparatory for AP and increasingly challenge students. For these reasons, we remove barriers to AP, such as offering honors or “regular” classes at the same level as AP

    4. Creating an AP Culture Make “Advanced Placement” a household name Everyone* in your building believes “our few basic beliefs” and problem solves ways to help students gain better access to AP. (*this can be a work in progress ?) Advanced Placement is explained, promoted, and communicated as an expectation in individual meetings, print (e.g. newsletter), workshops, large meetings (Back to School Night), and small groups (PTSA meetings).

    5. Actively Recruit AP Students Raising Awareness – large scale and small scale: Evening programs for middle and high school students and their parents: AP Panel AP Open House Personally approach students and parents using AP Potential.

    6. What is AP Potential? What College Board says: A free, web-based tool that allows schools to generate rosters of students who are likely to score a 3 or better on a given AP® Exam. A tool to help you identify additional AP students and increase access to AP, ensuring that no student who has the chance of succeeding in AP is overlooked. AP Potential “provides educators with an objective , data-driven method for identifying students who are likely to succeed in a particular AP course.”

    7. What is AP Potential? Put another way (or 3 other ways): A tool to help you meet your AP recruitment goals. THE place to start when thinking of who to recruit The answer to, “If only I knew who else was out there that could or should take AP … ”

    8. Okay, but … What is AP Potential? A report that you (the designated PSAT coordinator or other account holder on www.collegeboard.com ) can access after the PSAT administration (usually in early December). Once the scores are received at your school (*be on the lookout in early December), you will receive a score report that has the school’s PSAT data and access code for AP Potential. To access your school’s spreadsheet of students: Go to https://appotential.collegeboard.com/welcome.do Login using your College Board education professional account and enter the AP Potential access code. Access codes appear on the PSAT/NMSQT Roster of Scores mailed to principals in December. *Let’s try it … http://www.collegeboard.com/counselors/app/demo.html

    9. Using the AP Potential Report Give to teachers and other important individuals in your building. Hold an event for these students and parents. Give a copy to all school counselors to use in individual meetings. Teachers and counselors can have a one-on-one conversation with the student, Sample Letters on AP Potential Mail the letter OR send as a auto-call Use this to personally invite parents and students to your AP Night.

    10. Increasing AP Enrollment Create an AP Culture Actively Recruit AP Students Use your VASS colleagues for consultation and collaboration. You can start with me! Valerie Keating vtkeating@henrico.k12.va.us 804-527-4606
