Vocabulary/Glossary:

pyramidion: this is the top piece of an ancient Egyptian pyramid.

square-based pyramid: a 3d shape with 5 faces altogether (4 triangles and one square), 8 edges and 5 vertices!

ceremony: a gathering with religious meaning.

engraving: scratching a design onto a hard, flat surface, by cutting grooves into it.

replica: an exact copy.

resin: a solid material made from plants.

limestone: a type of rock mainly made from calcite (calcium carbonate).

Explanation:

The pyramidion was a small square-based pyramid that was placed at the top of the pyramid-shaped tomb of its owner. It was an important part of the ceremonies practiced by ancient Egyptians.

The four faces of this example are each engraved with prayers to help let the dead person live forever in the next world.

This pyramidion comes from the tomb of an important member of the religious community in Thebes during the 21st Dynasty, around 1000 BC.

The original version is held in The Louvre, Paris and is made from limestone. The replica is made from resin but is a good copy of the original.

Helping other people

Think about what you have done to help other people. It could be a little thing, like looking for someone’s missing packed lunch, or a bigger thing, like comforting someone when they are hurt or upset.

Think about:

Who did I help?

When did I help?

What did I do to help?

Where did I help?

Why did I help?

How did I feel when I helped?

Discuss the things the class have done to help.

On the faces of your pyramidion, write about something you have done to help others. Think about what we have discussed:

Who did I help?

When did I help?

What did I do to help?

Where did I help?

Why did I help?

How did I feel when I helped?

E.g. I helped John a few weeks ago when he couldn’t find his lunchbox by looking in the hall for it. I helped because I thought it would be considerate and therefore I felt more upbeat especially when we found it.

Success Criteria:

*Use feelings/emotions words

(E.g. kind, considerate, empathy, sympathy)

*Use conjunctions

(E.g. because, so, which means that)

*Use connectives

(E.g. as a result, therefore, consequently)

*Neat handwriting.

*Decorate your lettering attractively.

*Share the helping histories with each other.

*Construct the pyramidions using scissors and glue sticks.

*Display your pyramidions in an appropriate place.
