  1. What is the difference between information storage, retrieval and information retrieval systems ext-6134157.livejournal.com/17871.html An automated storage and retrieval system, abbreviated AS/RS, is a subgenre of warehouse automation technology mainly designed to buffer, store, and retrieve products and inventory on demand. In other words, AS/RS is a combination of tools, equipment, and integrated interfaces that facilitate the handling, storage, and retrieval of materials with precision, security, and speed. With the AS/RS system, a person encounters several mechanisms and terms, and it is vital to know the difference between them. Information Storage – It is the process of collecting, organising, and storing data into a data repository in digital form, from where you can access it for business purposes. It is an integral part of warehouse execution software (WES) and warehouse management software (WMS). Retrieval System – As already hinted, a retrieval system is a subsection of automated warehousing technology supported by robots and computers. It is used in warehouses to retrieve information as and when required. Information Retrieval – It refers to the storage program of an automated software technology that deals with the organisation, storage, retrieval, and evaluation of information from data repositories. An IR system is a part of an AS/RS. Thus, information storage, retrieval system, and retrieval are associated with the same ecosystem – AS/RS. So, now that we have touched on the basics of AS/RS, let us understand its details. A brief overview of automated storage and retrieval systems An automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) enables businesses involved in warehousing and order fulfilment to partially or fully automate their operations. From material handling to inventory organisation and product pick-up, the AS/RS can optimise all the phases of warehouse management, thereby increasing efficiency and ensuring security. The AR/RS is typically used in situations when – There is a need to improve space utilisation. A high volume of goods is constantly transported in and out of the storage. Accuracy is of utmost importance as the excessive load can lead to heavy damage. There is no processing of products. Top technologies of AR/RS Unit-load Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems – They handle larger loads of up to 5500 pounds and place them on pallets or within containers of wood, plastic, or industrial materials. Mini-load AS/RS has one or more narrow aisles of storage racks that can reach heights exceeding 100 feet. There are two main types of unit-load AS/RS – 1/3

  2. Fixed aisle - It is a system where pallet racks or containers are arranged in narrow rows. We can see cranes fixed to a single row of pallets going up and down and also horizontally to add or remove items. Moveable Aisle – It is a system where cranes move between multiple aisles of pallets instead of a single aisle. Some of the benefits of the unit-load AS/RS include stable and fast transport of goods within high-density storage, the ability to handle multiple load types, and operating on less energy. Mini-load Automated Storage Retrieval System – They are similar to mini-load AS/RS but handle smaller loads of up to 1000 pounds and support store cartons, storage trays, and totes instead of large containers and pallets. The various types of mini-load AS/RS are – Micro-load – Its units range in size from six to 72 feet and can be placed in existing buildings or fixed within designs for new constructions. The micro-load AS/RS is apt for goods-to-person order fulfilment systems. Mini-load shuttles – They are systems that can handle packages of up to 100 pounds and require only 5 per cent of the energy of a crane. Mini-load shuttles are easy to manoeuvre in tiny and cramped spaces, allowing them to complete up to five times the number of cycles per aisle vis-à-vis a standard crane. Some of the benefits of the mini-load AS/RS include superb usability, beginner-friendly, better security, space-efficient, and design for excellent ergonomic operator usage. AR/RS Carousal Storage Systems– This system comprises bins of products or inventory that rotate continuously along a track. When the operator requests a particular item, the system automatically rotates so that the appropriate container is accessible and the item can be picked. There are various types of carousal-based AS/RS – Vertical Life Modules (VLMs) – It is a module that comprises tray columns at its front and back. Verticle Lift Modules have a centred insertor or extractor for storing and retrieving trays. VLMs offer excellent space utilisation, enable dynamic storage capabilities, and foster multi-tasking by combining pods. Horizontal or Standard Carousals – They are composed of bins that rotate horizontally along a track and are akin to a merry-ground. Operators have to instruct the system, after which it positions to rotate for item retrieval. Standard carousel storage systemsare pocket-friendly, ensure good space utilisation, and promise efficient material storage. Vertical Carousal – It is an AR/RS system similar to a Ferris wheel. Vertical carousels are excellent for handling small and fast-moving items and are typically for handling raw materials, documents, etc. The vertical storage systems made by reliable companies like ArmesMaini offer multiple advantages, such as maximising warehouse space, cost-effectiveness, higher throughput rates, and so forth. 2/3

  3. Shuttle-based AS/RS – It delivers inventory through shuttles or ‘bots’ that run on a track between racking structures. It can be battery or capacitor-powered. After receiving a request from the operator, the shuttle will travel to the storage area where the requested product is kept and returned with the appropriate tote or shipping container. Shuttle retrieval systems have been developed with varying features. One model is vertically mechanised for better space utilisation. So, here we have a crisp summary of the various technologies within the Automated Storage Retrieval Systems radar. Concluding Thoughts Automated warehouses have an edge over the rest, and the benefits are much higher than the initial investment. Armes Maini is a storage solution company that offers world-class vertical storage systems and carousals to elevate your warehouse management to the optimal level. 3/3
