Elias Houstis Professor Aditya P. Mathur Professor and Associate Head Department of Computer Sciences Purdue University

    Slide 2:What is Internet Computing?

Internet Computing includes all forms of computation, and the hardware and software needed to perform it, with a significant use of the Internet Examples: On-line auctions, on-line banking, and distance education Sample Technologies for Internet Computing: Networks, databases, CORBA/COM, and many software systems

    Slide 3:What is Internet Computing?

Electronic Commerce is a business that relies heavily on Internet Computing Distributed commercial establishments that rely on the Internet for their day-to-day business activities engage in Internet Computing

    Slide 4:Proposal

ECE CS Management Establish an Interdisciplinary Certificate program in Internet Computing (CIC) starting in the fall of 2000.

    Slide 5:Objectives of CIC

To educate students in the principles, technology, and skills necessary to initiate, maintain, or upgrade an infrastructure needed to realize an Internet Business that makes use of Internet Computing.

    Slide 6:Who Benefits from CIC?

Late or mid-career scientists and engineers Students interested in careers in Electronic Commerce and other forms of Internet Business

    Slide 7:Required Background

An undergraduate degree in CS, any Engineering discipline, Management, or any Science discipline. Must be proficient in: Programming in Java or C++, Data Structures Must have a good knowledge of: Database design Networking fundamentals Internet technology: HTML, Browsers, JavaScript

    Slide 8:Course Requirements

Core courses (6-credits) Electronic Commerce (MGMT) Internet Computing (CS/ECE) Project in Internet Computing (0 credits, interdisciplinary) Three courses from the following (9 credits): Multimedia Systems (ECE Internet Security (CS) Spatial Databases (CS) Design of Multi-Serve Networks (CS) Management of Enterprise Information Systems (MGMT)

    Slide 9:Faculty

CS Walid Aref, Mike Atallah, Bharat Bhargava, Ahmed Elmagarmid, Elias Houstis, Aditya Mathur, Sonia Fahmy, Kihong Park, Sunil Prabhakar, Jens Vitek, David Yau ECE Jose Fortes, Arif Ghafoor Management Alok Chaturvedi, Patrick Duparcq

    Slide 10:Enrollment

Limit of 20 students to be raised to 30 in 2001 Demand expected to exceed the limit Both degree and non-degree students may enroll Graduate students from CS, ECE, Management, and other disciplines likely to enroll in the certificate program

Slide 11:CIC and the NSF Proposal

Equipment needed by IC Core courses provided for by the infrastructure grant Research faculty who will use the equipment acquired from the NSF grant will also be teaching the courses in CIC Examples of equipment use Programmable routers: useful in networking course Multimedia equipment: useful in Data Compression, Spatial Databases

    Slide 12:Delivery of CIC

On campus delivery starting in Fall 2001 Full time students can complete the certificate in two semesters and one summer A student must register in Project in Internet Computing while enrolled in CIC. This is a pass/fail course. A team project continues throughout the duration of the student’s enrollment in the certificate program.

Slide 13:Approval and Management of CIC

A committee set up by the Graduate School reviews the CIC proposal If approved, the CIC program is initiated with a home department Upon successful completion of the requirements, a student receives a certificate in IC

    Slide 14:Management of CIC
