Matahari sebagai sumber cahaya mempunyai lingkaran jauh lebih besar dari pada bumi maupun bulan • Oleh karena itu bayangan bumi dan bulan akan berbentuk kerucut. • Kerucut bayangan bumi lebih panjang dari pada kerucut bayangan bulan. • Kerucut bayangan yang gelap disebut Umbra • Bayangan yang tidak terlalu gelap di sekitar umbra dinamakan penumbra.

  3. Jika, pada suatu malam terjadi gerhana total, keadaan yang dapat diamati adalah: • Gerhana Penumbra • Gerhana Sebagian • Gerhana Total • Gerhana Sebagian • Gerhana Penumbra • Bulan Normal
