Styles in the furniture industry and interior design industry often change, just like they do in the high fashion industry. In fact, some of the colour schemes and materials used by the top designers from the leading fashion houses often influence the leading interior designers and furniture manufacturers when selecting what to use to create exceptional living spaces.

If you are planning on redesigning the rooms in your home this fall, consider some or all of the following hot design trends growing in popularity throughout Toronto:

Vintage furniture with modern designs-

  • Vintage styled furniture is being given a fresh new, modern look by incorporating contemporary textures and materials in the design. From deco-period desks and chairs to sofas and end tables, this style offers a classic feel, but with an updated and trendy look.

Pastel hues in earthy undertones-

  • Colour schemes seem to be transitioning to those with earthy undertones. This past spring, pastels in light shades were popular colour schemes, but as fall rolls around, people do not want though bright colours

But rather a nice pastel mixed with a somewhat darker earth-coloured undertone, such as lavender or blush, to give the rooms within their home a more organic feel, while still maintaining a clean, soft, and tailored silhouette.

Repurposing of materials to create new furniture pieces-

  • Severalfurniture manufacturers have started to shift towards greener practices and utilize these in producing new pieces. For instance

One trend we are seeing is repurposing individual pieces and using various design elements to create a new one that is more in line with the latest designs, such as taking a rug and using it to cover an ottoman.

Fabrics that look like one thing but are made from some other material-

  • People want stunning and elegant furniture in their home, but at the same time need it to be functional and withstand the wear and tear of their children and pets.

As such, many manufacturers are moving towards more stain-resistant materials. For example, one high end manufacturer is using a material that looks like velvet on their sofas, but actually contains polyester.

Mixing various metals to enhance and accent pieces-

  • Gold and brass have been popular choices for years, but these has been an increase in the use of silver and polished nickel to create new colourdesigns.

In addition, a new material that is being used alongside metals is called white plaster, which is a resin-based durable material that gives the appearance of plaster.

Incorporating natural looking textures as accents one various furniture pieces-

  • From abaca and cane to rattan, a wide range of texturized materials are being used to upholster accent pieces to give them more depth. Another technique being used to add texture to pieces is wire brushing to make wooden grains stand out more.

Transforming art into wallpapers-

  • For those that like to add an artsy look and feel to the room, one hot trend is to wallpaper the wall using wallpaper that was created from actual pieces of art.
