    3. Overview Background NFPA-70E –Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace How equipment design can help Impact on Service Technicians NEC 409 – Industrial Control Panels Summary Q&A

    4. Background Each year approximately 300 workers die from electrocutions at work. Tens of thousands more are injured resulting in lost time There are hundreds of thousands more near misses.

    5. Background Mandated that an employer provide a safe work place. Defines national consensus standards as the starting point for employee safety. Provides for specifics related to safety requirements. Authorizes OSHA as both an inspection and enforcement agency.

    6. Background NFPA-70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace was first published in 1979. It was revised in 1981, 1983, 1995, 2000. In 2004 the seventh and current edition was published.

    7. NFPA-70E Designed to protect workers from: Electrical shock Thermal Burn Arc Flash Arc Blasts

    8. NFPA-70E

    9. NFPA-70E However, having to wear PPE: Adds time Inhibits productivity Can be uncomfortable at best in a hot bakery environment Equipment design can help

    17. NEC 409

    18. Summary Consider NFPA-70E requirements when designing equipment: Separate enclosures for line voltage and control voltage < 50Volt Control voltage Provide voltage monitors Provide infrared windows at line terminals Apply other technologies as they develop Be aware of training, equipment and PPE requirements for service technicians at customer facilities.

    19. Summary Consider the requirements of NEC-409 for Industrial Control Panels: Labeling requirements SCCR ratings Design and layout
