  2. Physical Activity • Form of movement that causes your body to use energy • For example: playing sports, exercising, or doing chores around the house

  3. Physical Fitness Ability to carry out daily tasks easily and have enough energy reserved for unexpected physical demands

  4. Benefits ofPhysical Activity The benefits lasts a lifetime! It helps strengthen you: *physically *mentally/emotionally *socially

  5. Physical Health • Benefits: • Makes your body stronger • Increases your energy • Improves your posture • Reduces chronic fatigue & stiffness • Reduces the risk of diseases

  6. Continuation of Physical Health • Improves the following body systems • Cardiovascular: strengthens the heart, allowing blood to flow efficiently • Respiratory: can breathe easily without the muscles tiring quickly • Nervous: improves your reaction time

  7. Mentally/Emotionally • Benefits • Reduces stress • Helps manage anger and frustrations • Improves your mood • Decreases risk of depression • Increases self-confidence • Improves concentration

  9. Risks of Physical Inactivity • Teen Facts (2000/2001): • 1 in 3 teens (35%) do not participate regularly • Decline in regular physical activity from 73% in 9th grade to 61% in 12th grade • 29% attend a physical education class

  10. Sedentary Lifestyle • Involves little physical activity • Teens spend too much time: • Watching TV • Playing video games • Texting • E-mailing • Talking on the phone

  11. Negative Effects of Sedentary Lifestyle • Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) • Diabetes • Cancer • Osteoporosis • Reduces the ability to manage stress • Decreases the opportunity to meet people

  12. Physical Activity & Weight Control • Fact: ½ of Adults and 14% of Teens are OVER WEIGHT • Due to over eating & sedentary lifestyle

  13. Metabolism • Process in which the body gets energy from food • Metabolic rate rises when your active • Stop exercising your metabolic rate slows down

  14. Calories • Foods energy is measured in units of heat • Need a certain amount each day to function • Are burned through physical activity • If not burned off they turn into FAT-yikes!
