  3. 2. Roll up sleeves or remove loose clothing 3. Put on goggles. 4. Put on a heat resistant apron. 5. Remove flammable items

  4. 3 THINGS TO CHECK BEFORE LIGHTING BURNER • Check that gas is in off position (straight up is on)

  5. 2. Check that valve on bunsen burner is off. (turned all the way left) RIGHT TO LIGHT OR LEFT OUT!

  6. 3. Check that windows (air vents) are closed.

  7. LIGHTING THE BUNSEN BURNER 1.Turn on main gas. If you hear gas, check the valve on the bunsen burner. It may be open. (You will need to turn off all gas and start again)

  8. 2. Turn the valve on the bunsen burner to the right about 3 half turns.

  9. 3. Light burner immediately. If you don’t light it right away turn off the burner and clear area of gas. Try again.

  10. 4.After burner is lit adjust valve on burner so that flame is about 6 inches high.

  11. 5.Adjust the windows (air vents) by turning them counterclockwise until you see an inner blue triangle in the flame.

  12. HEATING A TEST TUBE When heating a test tube, hold end so it is at the top of the “Blue triangle”. ALWAYS POINT TEST TUBE AWAY FROM YOU!

  13. TURNING OFF BURNER When finished, turn off the main gas valve. Wait until the burner cools and then close the valve on the bunsen burner AND CLOSE THE WINDOWS.
