ADULT BASIC EDUCATION:GED – HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA There are four adult learning centers in Doña Ana County: Doña Ana Community College: Quintana Learning Center, Gadsden Learning Center, Chaparral Learning Center, and Sunland Park Learning Center All GED classes, tutoring, and books are FREE! A student must be at least 16 years old without a high school diploma and not in high to use the services. Classes, instruction and tests are available in either English or Spanish.

    4. Steps for Preparing and Passing the GED Tests Attend an ABE orientation at a learning center (or in class, in outlying areas). Take an academic skills assessment to locate your strong and weak areas in writing, math and reading. This is required two weeks before attending class. Complete a plan of action to include class registration, an individualized educational plan (IEP), workshops, tutoring, or all of the above. Re-evaluate academic skills for readiness (after 50 hours of instruction). Advance to higher level. Take practice GED tests. Go to a GED orientation at the NMSU Testing Center (646-1921). Pass the official GED tests. Participate in graduation with Doña Ana Community College students. Attend College!

    5. Become a U.S. Citizen:ABE Can Help You Knowledgeable and friendly ABE instructors teach U.S. history, government, civic participation, requirements for citizenship, conversational ESL., and basic literacy (reading and writing). Classes provide plenty of practice with questions and written samples that may be a part of the interview process. Classes, the citizenship application form, information about the process, and a citizenship workbook are FREE. Courses are offered in both English and Spanish during fall, spring, and summer semesters. To help students with naturalization application costs, we are now awarding $500.00 scholarships to eligible students.

    6. ABE Tutorial and Student Support Services New Student Orientation, Advising, and Pre-Testing: Students enrolling in ABE for the first time or who have been out for more than six months are asked to sign up for a new-student orientation. Career Information – CHOICES/Transition to College: Computerized career information is available to students who are ready to explore career choices and opportunities. Individualized Tutoring and Small-Group Instruction: Students who find it too difficult to attend classes or who desire additional help with ABE classes can also through Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) with help from our tutors. Learning Styles, Study Skills, and Tutoring: Learning center staff also provide students with materials and information about time management, listening, note taking and test taking to help them become more successful students.

    7. Basic Reading Program andFirst-Language Literacy Literacy Volunteers of Doña Ana County (a member of Proliteracy of America) is dedicated to helping adults who have not had the opportunity to learn to read or write basic English. This program helps develop basic literacy skills so that learners can continue with other educational goals. Trained volunteers are matched with students on a one-to-one basis as available. Native Spanish speakers with limited literacy skills in their first language are encouraged to inquire about the availability of tutors for first-language literacy tutoring.
