HFA requested sub/regional bodies to: Advancing Disaster Risk Reduction

  • Coordinate and facilitate national inputs in their respective region to ensure sufficient quality and representation of national and regional realities;

    • Done by League of Arab States in 2008

  • Provide an analysis of key trends, progress and challenges in implementing risk reduction and recovery activities with specific attention to trans-boundary efforts. Done jointly by League of Arab States and UNISDR Regional Office

  • National Reviews / Reports: Advancing Disaster Risk Reduction

    • Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, Somalia, Syria, Yemen

  • One in-depth country review “case study” Egypt.

  • Regional analysis and review of progress supported by a resolution from the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment

  • Weak and incomplete Institutional Frameworks Advancing Disaster Risk Reduction

  • Inadequate capacity to implement DRR

  • Weak knowledge and info base for DRR

  • Weak vertical (regional-national) and horizontal (national-local) coordination

  • Difficulty in reorienting to DR management

  • Scarcity/limitation of adequate financing for DRR

  • Ensuring the sustainability of the set national agenda and policy to adopt the DRR

  • Regional review will be presented in a regional workshop in Jeddah 19-21 May convened by League of Arab States, Chair of CAMRE Executive Office, UNISDR and IsDB

  • Political commitment to be asserted through regional policies on sustainable development

  • Focus on (1) knowledge management including enhancement of data on risk, hazards and vulnerabilities (2) capacity development for national authorities working on DRR to expedite implementation of HFA
