    3. WESTRIDGE INFORMATION Eight feeder elementary schools –Apache, Bonjour, Comanche, McAuliffe, Overland Park, Pawnee, Rising Star, Sunflower Projected enrollment of 959 students – 503 seventh graders 456 eighth graders Teachers are all Highly Qualified in their curricular areas. 3

    4. Basic Information School day starts at 8:45 AM and ends 3:45 PM – There are eight periods, 45 minutes long, with FIVE-minute passing periods between each class. Students may be in the building starting at 7:45 AM and if not with a staff member students are to be off campus no later than 4:00 PM Teachers are available for help before school from 8:05 until 8:35 Open tutoring in Library every morning from 8:00 – 8:35 4

Basic Information (cont) Each seventh grade student will have 2 lockers each with its own combination -one in the academic hall and one for physical education located in the gym locker room Students are expected to dress out for physical education and can purchase gym uniforms at fee payment in August 4 Lunches occur during 4th and 5th hour and run from 11:15 to 1:15 Student ID card acts as a Debit Card- Money can be put on your student’s account -online or by check 5

    8. 6th Graders to Visit Westridge On May 13, 2011 all current 6th graders will travel to Westridge for a 3 hour visit in which they will learn all about middle school and specifically what goes on here at Westridge. They will take tours, visit classes, and get to interact with and meet many of their future classmates. 8

    9. Wildcat Welcome (Aug 15-16) 9 Westridge will take extreme pleasure in making sure that your child’s transition from elementary to middle school is as seamless and enjoyable as possible. Your children will learn how we do things the:

    10. Enrollment The following 2 slides depict the form that your child brought home from school and outlines the enrollment options they have. We have already preselected many of the courses that we know they will take. The next slides illustrate what that looks like. 10

    13. Basic Student Schedule English/ Adv English Science/ Adv. Science Math (PreAlg., Math7 Plus or Alg 1) Social Studies Reading / Communications Physical Education/ Study Hall Elective Elective

    14. Advanced English Classes are accelerated and enriched Students should demonstrate a strong interest in reading and writing. Students should demonstrate the motivation and self-discipline to complete assignments on time. Students should have good attendance. Student may have 20-30 min. of homework daily. Students will be asked to complete a summer reading assignment.

    15. Advanced Science Class is both accelerated and enriched Student should be an independent learner with good study skills. Student should have an interest in Science and like to do individual science projects. Organizational skills to complete long-term projects are essential. Student may have 20-30 min. of homework daily. Student should have good attendance. Student must have good mathematic skills and reading comprehension.

    16. Math Placement Student placement will be determined using Kansas Assessment/MAP/ Basic Skills scores. Students work habits and motivation will be a secondary consideration for placement. Math placement may not be finalized until all data is available, which will include spring assessments.

    17. Math Options Math 7 Plus- (2 period course) students are not demonstrating a solid foundation of concepts covered in elementary grades. Pre-Algebra.- Students who have demonstrated solid skills in math concepts and computation. Algebra 1- Students have demonstrated mastery of the concepts covered in Pre-Algebra.

    18. Elective Options Students will have 2 elective classes each semester They can take four semester long elective classes They can take one, year long elective and 2 semester long electives They can take two, year long electives. Students in double blocked Math have 1 elective per semester 18

    26. Recommendations By A Teacher Student demonstrates and meets criteria set by the district to take the Adv. class. By A Parent Parent understands that student does not meet the criteria set by the district but is making the choice to challenge their student. Student may be dropped from the class if they do not maintain a C average.
